Can Colin Montgomerie Still Win a Major?

European Tour

Hi all

Time and Time again we hear this question, and yet again it is raised.

It is now confirmed Monty will play out his exemption on the European Tour til 2015 and his main aim is to get back into the top 50.

So to answer the queston, can Monty win a Major: YES, Is it likely right now: NO, here's why:

1. Monty is not even exempted to any Major's next year and may have to go to a qualifying event to get in

2. The competition is just to hard for Monty. Playing against Tiger Woods alone I can only think of one time Monty Finished above Woods (Winged Foot 2006. Then you got the likes of Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Robert Karlsson, Lee Westwood etc. And Monty is not at there level at the moment.

3. The Major Courses are so so Tough and the winners are usually over par. To make things worse, the distances of the courses are extremley long. Monty average drive distance is 280.2 Yards and his putting is absolutley poor. Add that together Monty is going to continually miss the cut!!!

4. Next year Monty will be 46, I don't want to use age as an excuse, but how many 46 and upwards have won a major?

5. His recent Form has been shocking, Statistically for the year he is 57 over par. The best result for Monty this year is finishing 2nd in the Open De Frane and 6th at the Quatar Masters.

6. He has a useless caddy Craig Connolly, who does nothing but tels people to keep quiet and gives the crowd smug grins (He should never ever let Alastair Mclean go, look who he is with now Lee Westwood.................enough said).

I am a massive fan of Colin Montgomerie, but the above issues he has to address to if he is even thinking he is good enough to compete for a Major, but for now I can only dream of him winning one :)

What do you guys think? gree Disagree?

Time and time again Monty is written off in the majors and even tour events. He has always come back to prove the critics wrong, winning the european open last year being a prime example after many predicted he would never win again.
The open championship in 2005 and the following years US open show that he can still compete with the worlds best on his day.
Regardless of whether he wins a major or not his carrer will certainly not be judged on it. he has acheived too much else to go down as a nearly man.
Hopefully monty can win this week and get back in the top 50 in time for april.

I`m a great Monty fan but i think it`s about time people just sat back and watched for a change. Monty still has the ability to win tournaments but every time he tees up in a major the media start pumping up his chances of winning. That puts pressure on him ( like they have done to every other Brit) and that is usually too big a burden to carry. Justin Rose was a hugh prospect a few years ago and I think the perssure of expectancy actually has held him back. The same has happened to Lee Westwood, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter but all have failed. If Colin, or any of the others, goes into a major without the media hype we might all be in for a pleasant surprise.
In answer to the question, I think Colin has the game and desire to win a major but I doubt if he can do so if he is constantly put into the spotlight every time a major comes around.

Monty is in the Hong Kong Open as we speak. He is 4 shots behind, can he still win it?.....

Er... no.

For a while it was looking promising but there was a point on Day 3 where his shoulders slumped and you just knew it was all going to be uphill from there on.

The problem was, we could see that he knew it, too.

It puts me in mind of what was SO great about Seve. He could be 50 yards away from the green in the middle of gorse bush - and yet you knew that part of him was thinking of holing the shot. In other words, he never stopped believing.

No chance! Monty has a severe attitude problem when things go wrong which only makes his game worse which is very surprising considering he has been a professional for so long. He is his own worst enemy. The media should stop hyping him up as if he is still God's gift to golf. Monty I am afraid to say is past it.

Can Monty win a major?
Can England win a major championship in football?
Can Jimmy White win the world championship in snooker?
Can Scotland reach the last 8 in a major competition?

The answer to all these regularly asked questions is 'yes they can', but this should be followed with "they almost definitely won't and I ain't going to put any of my dosh on it".

well for a start you are a bit off the mark.
england i believe WON the world cup[a major championship] in 1966.
scotland came 5th at the 1992 european championship[a major championship] in sweden.
i doubt jimmy whte will ever win the world title but i believe even he has a better chance of that than monty ever winning a major!
