Arguably a step in the right direction for RA but I cannot see John Kear wanting to lose one of his best players.

Rovers offered Paul Cooke in a swap for Atkins last season, which Kear rejected. As there is no money in the game, I doubt he will allow Hull to simply buy out his contract.

I think that this is a non-starter, Emlyn!

Wakey fans will be happy that Ryan is staying but most will be concerned that there is speculation regarding several other players on the move. Danny Brough and Leo-Latu wanting a contract in the NRL, Richard Moore wanted by Wigan. There is also the fact that they will be running with a very weak pack next year (particularly in the second row).
These players wanting away from Belle View could be the knock-on effect of the dissappointment regarding the collapse of their stadium plans which have resulted in a level of uncertainty after the current round of franchises.

Their back-line for 2009 looks very good though IMO and if injuries are kept to a minimum I still see Wakey in the top 8 next year.

Not surprised that FC were linked with him as offensively he powered over for a try with about 3 men on him and also squeezed as pass out for Petersen in the Cup semi final to keep Wakefield in the hunt.

I'm glad he's still around and given that he missed out on the WC squad having been included in the train on squad this is a surprise as many touted him to move onto a "bigger" club. It's debatable whether a move to FC would have helped him achieve this ambition as Yeaman has struggled to make that leap despite some great form in recent years.

Wakey have been criticised for not recruiting in the close season but hanging on to their better players may prove shrewd business.

goldenbatleybulldog - bitterness dosent suit you.

Tigerade - which players dont want to test themselves in the best comp thats why danny brough left you to come to us winkeye <toungeout> and am sure many players have said they want to go to nrl but fact is brough or latu isnt good enough, regarding moore if he does go which i still see as very unlikely we will be getting players in exchange so will overall improve our strength as he didnt have the best year last year.

Right Emlyn, lets get down to the article, as a wakefield fan i am extremely happy that ryan atkins has commited himself to the club, he has improved ten-fold while he has been here and has been in the england squads and i feel if he kicks on another gear i could see ryan atkins becoming a future eng centre esp as senior will probably retire.
It is a good move by the club and our backs are the strongest they've ever been this year and with some promising young english forwards, in ferguson bibb and pitts we are using english players offering them the chance to progress unlike many other clubs (thats what the franchise system is for surely), so in this respect wakefield should be applauded.

"Danny Brough and Leo-Latu wanting a contract in the NRL"

to be fair both basically were asked by ozzie journos 'would you ever consider playing down here in oz'

how many players would say no i would never consider playing in the best league in the world. so not sure they are exactly 'wanting away'

i do think we are a bit short up front although i expect pitts to play a bigger rle this year which is good to see.

as far as atkins is concerned its good to see a player showing a bit of loyalty to the club who gave him his break. good news for wakey ... at last!
