I think Rob Lee's right and Shearer would jump at the chance. He's never really said he didn't want the job - when Keegan got it he said he simply wasn't offered the job, and this time round he said he couldn't be manager with the current infrastructure - ie he would want to be in charge of buying players.

Whether or not he should get the job is another matter... Gianfranco Zola is showing at West Ham that being a popular and influential ex-player is not enough, but something tells me that Shearer is closer to good management material, and he's just itching to do the toon job under the right circumstances. It would be a gamble, but I've just got a feeling he would do a good job. He wouldn't be my first choice, but we can't get much worse than we are now...

I dont see why he cant do it and everyone is talking it down! whats wrong with you all? why nopt take a chance bleedin nora it cant get any worse can it, and if keane and hughes and evn dopey southgate can do it I dont see why shearer cant he has all the credentials to become a succesful manager especially at a club he loves and knows inside out, i would be chuffed especially iof we got a new owner willing to provide transfer funds, we could also put this keegan saga behind us and start a fresh.

I love the idea that ex-players know the club 'inside out'. How? Do you think the board discuss all their wheelings and dealings with all the players. Besides which, it seems to me that the club has changed quite alot since Shearer left - new owner, new board, new director of football, new setup...

If Shearer became NUFC manager, he'd definitely want it on his own terms - like Harry arriving at Spurs, you can't see him working with a Director of Football or anyone like that... and certainly, like Keegan, he would be one of the few Newcastle figureheads who might be beyond the ire of some of those fickle Newcastle boo-boys who've seen off a few managers in their time!

However, as others have said, until Alan has some managerial experience, you're taking a massive risk with the fortunes of a Premier league club. Even Roy Keane took over at Sunderland when they were sat in the Championship, giving him some precious time to learn his trade and mould a Premiership-ready side before promotion.

In short, Shearer would be better off spending a couple of years working under an existing manager (like Tony Adams did at Pompey) who suits his 'style' and so he can prepare for the big-time!

I like you toons so I wouldn't wish Shearer on you as a manager.
And, for those few feeling slightly offended ask yourself this:
1.What experience has he got of managing big clubs?
2.What "business" nous does he posses?
3.What "world" class players would he attract?
4.What would he be like?

Shearer was a great great player, agreed, but he is rather below par as a pundit who's tunnel vision, broad statements, soft skills and copy-speak can only be classified as non ground breaking without depth or ability to think outside the box, literally.

If Shearer wants to become a manager he needs to take the long "apprentice" route otherwise he will fail, as he soooo do not come across as a natural gifted persona.
Peace.

Next up, Ian Wright managing Arsenal, Paul Gascoigne at Spurs, and Mick Quinn at Coventry. What, so being a good player doesn't mean you should be the manager??!!

i have published an article on here outlining several reasons why i think Shearer would be a good manager (for any club):
