Friendlies - what a waste of time

Can't believe it. every other week it seems to be another round of dour international matches ruining the game. This time a round of meaningless friendlies. With all the big name players coming down with short term injuries again, tell me, what really is the point of international football and these non-sense friendlies? can we do away with them please? Its bad enough watching Northern Ireland v san marino and england mismatch against part-time khazakstan in the "competitive" world cup qualifiers, but these friendlies are farcical!
Hopefully this is the last round of internationals for a few months.

people need to stop moaning about every friendly we have
capello needs friendlys to asses the players
so just shut up and let him get on with his job

is it me or has anyone else noticed that all the players named in the opening article are managed by foreigners? Is their patriotism in question here? All the moaning does seem to come from none english managers as also mentioned?

As a Liverpool fan, I don't know what the real deal is with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, or Lampard or whoever else has dropped out of the match.

I too was quite suprised to hear that Gerrard was injured, because he did not seem too bad against Bolton. But I do know that Capello called him up to be looked at by the England medical staff, who then confirmed what the staff at Liverpool had previously said about his injury, and subsequently sent him home to rest...

So, that would suggest that Gerrard has really got an injury. As I said, Im not sure about the other players. They must have had the same procedure...

On the subject of meaningless friendlies, if they come against the likes of Germany, Brazil, Argentina etc, how can they be meaningless? I don't particularly like them, if the FA want to have international friendlies breaking up the season, then I'd rather they tried to get more teams who England could pit their strength against in a manner which would tell them how good or bad the really are...

This friendly is meaning full for a lot of patriotic people as a matter of fact. Look 7000 Brit fly to support their team in Germany!

Anyone knows why Downing is starting instead of Young? Young has far outperformed him this season, in fact the only person challenging him for the left wing berth is surely Joe Cole?!

Started with Defoe and Gabby - i'm surprised Bent didn't get a start with his current form. Good start, England look up for it.

Would Arsenal call the league cup meaningless? Look at the way they are putting their youngsters through and u would have to say no. Injuries are part and parcel of interational football, it doesn't matter wheather u r playing Germany or San Marino it's a honour to play for your country friendly or not. The fact is friendlies have helped to develop numerous internationals over the years, how many of the current England side made ther debut's in a friendly? Without friendlys would managers risk up coming 19 year olds in a competetive match against a top 5 side, if u stop friendlies they wouldn't get a chance until they at least 21. By devaluing friendlies u render all international football obselete. Wales just beat Denmark away and England are leading against Germany, Maradona is in town up in Scotland and these things are meaningless?
