Olympic medal must be the pinnacle

comment on the article

Golf, rugby sevens, baseball, softball, squash, roller sports and karate are among those presenting their cases for inclusion in the Olympic Games.

The sports for London 2012 have already been decided and these seven have to wait until next October to find out if they have a place in the 2016 Games.

My tuppenceworth? Sports should not be part of the Olympics unless and Olympic gold medal is considered the pinnacle of that sport. That rules out a few current sports too.

Which of these sports should get in? Any others you'd prefer? Form an orderly queue.

I don't think that is correct. Statistically basketball is the second most played and watch team sport (America, Russia, the majority of Europe, China, Argentina, Brazil... and more). Compared to basketball, cricket is very small. Once again it is played by men and women, and just because it might be small in England (or UK) doesn't mean you can discard it from your facts.

I would prefer to see an existing event with a twist. I would like to see the Mens 100m, but with drug taking allowed. It would be cool to see a 6sec 100m.

Imagine what would happen in the 60m, they'd probably need to move those walls further back so they'd have more time to slow down.

Another interesting twist on an olympic event, is to put known cheaters out on the field during the shotput, javelin and discuss events. More points are scored for hitting them. Would be an effective deterant against cheating or being caught...

I think it is time that people differentiated between what is sport and what are pastimes.

I'm not saying that baseball def should be included, but some of the reasons that people are discounting it on these boards are laughable!

"I think baseball should be discounted immediately, because I associate it with drugs cheats and I don't follow baseball at all, and barely know the rules" - Duneworld
Fair enough on the drugs point, but everything else in that sentence is ridiculous.

"baseball is just America so it is basically giving them some free medals" - hairycrab
Some of the best pro players at the moment are actually from the Caribbean and Asia, they just happen to play pro in America.

I actually think that baseball probably shouldn't be included, but not on the reasons above!
Mostly because you would get US college players turning up due to the top pros of all nationalities having commitments to the major leagues in the US.

"Each sport had a one-hour slot, with baseball making the first pitch in the closed-door presentations in Lausanne, Switzerland." = Pun of the century!

Now to my point... I'd say Baseball (if major leaguers would actually bother turning up), and rugby sevens. Sevens very popular at the Commonwealth Games, why not the Olympic Games? If no baseball after same ol' same ol', then I'd say squash, it's a safe sport to select for such an event.
