Maradona may quit Argentina role

International Argentina
comment on the article

The new Argentina head coach Diego Maradona says he will walk out on the national team ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Scotland if he is refused permission to appoint Oscar Ruggeri as his assistant.

Since being appointed on 4 November, the 48-year-old has reportedly been in dispute with the Argentinean Football Association over his choice of staff.

"I will be the trainer with my technical staff I want, otherwise I will not come to Glasgow," he said.

Carlos Bilardo, the Argentina FA's technical secretary, insists Maradona will not carry out his threat.

"He won't resign. I have spoken to Diego and told him he has to go slowly. There are 500 people he can choose to assist him," said Bilardo.

"When I coached the national team (between 1983 and 1990) I had to change my whole staff after four or five months of work.

"But Diego wants them all at once."

Argentina FA boss Julio Grondon, who Maradona is reported to be in dispute with, would not reveal the reasons for his dislike of former Argentina defender Ruggeri.

"It's my problem," he said. "I don't want to talk about this."

What's wrong with you lot (apart from putting the hand of God goal above the fact that he was one of the finest ever footballers)?

---

To be fair, he cheated. Not only that he cheated against our team and you expect us all to forget it? No way. That was a blatant lack of sportsmanship.

---

Too many England fans are like this. (And I'm an England fan btw).

It is now 2008. Nearly 2009. The Empire has gone. We are part of Europe. Our teams are largely staffed by foreign players. There is a black President in the USA.

In other words, times change. Things move on.

So should people!

Maradona may have had fast feet and an even quicker football brain but he always was, and still is, a complete flake.

What was the Argentina FA doing except pandering to his fans? I can only assume it's a case of the little monkey of their backs. Give a chance, let him foul up and get shot of him for good. maybe?

It makes as much sense as Gazza being the England boss. If this guy is still in the job by Christmas I'll be surprised. He is a disaster waiting to happen.

Eh? England regularly field the expert cheat Steven Gerrard, the man who stole the European cup. Noone in the game can teach Gerrard anything about simulation or gamesmanship. So do you only have a problem with cheating when it's the other team?

He's too full of himself for starters, & that kinda of persona will do his team no good. He has no experience at any kind of level unless you call being in rehab for years experience, however I doubt this will do him much good in football management. The whole thing is destined for disaster, even if he gets a good start at the weekend..

Maradona is the greatest footballer to walk this earth. Yes I am an England fan but funnily enough that does cloud my judgement. He was the best ... simple.

Did he cheat to score with his hand? Yes. Does EVERY single England player dive for a free kick, go down to win a penalty? Yes. So what exactly is the problem. If you have a problem with cheating then you would not have an ounce of respect for ANY footballer in the world. They all cheat, I don't agree with it but I am not stupid enough to dismiss it either.

Maradona is the greatest footballer on earth. His goal against England was amazing and nobody else could have won the world cup. What about 1966 when the ball didn't cross the line. What about the time owne dived for England. As for being a manager he will motivate those players far more than anybody else as they all look up to him.

Pele wasn't good enough to clean Diego's boots.

'Pele wasn't good enough to clean Diego's boots'

Twit.

Would that be the same Pele who won three World Cups and was the greatest player of his day?

When Maradonna was mentioned in the same breeath as Pele - well, I just gave up. It's not his fault. Yes - superb goal against England. Yes, superb feet, touch and potential but he ruined it all by taking drugs and losing it all to temptation. He needed a better manger maybe but Pele for all his faults and bad tackles went for it and played as a footballer - Maradonna, I'm sorry, is a has-been. Good as he was he is half-man, half-history. Granted he could teach some great moves but WHEN has a great player ever become a good manager? Getting personal now since I'm living in Japan and had to endure years of ZICO (great player new X-File movie rating manager) Grrrr is all I can finish this rant with!

Hmmm serious pot calling kettle black going on here, maradona scored a goal which shouldt have been given... fair play he was still an outstanding player who scored a magnificant goal after that just proves they where going to be the only winners of that world cup, but what about 66 when a certain russian linesman gave a goal which never crossed the line? you can all dish it out but cant take it yourselfs ya bunch of hypocrites!!loveblush

I reckon this whole episode in the Diego story is complete farce. The guy is not a manger and never will be. He might have been a great player in his time (definately the greatest of his generation), But I personally question the guys intelligence. I have a feeling he might be as thick as the proverbial 2 planks.

I give him 6 months tops before hes out
