Vaughan starts on comeback trail

International Tests England
by Paul Fletcher (U1816326) 11 November 2008
comment on the article

Former England captain Michael Vaughan will join the national team's Performance Programme in India.

The 34-year-old was not in the original 15-man squad but is expected to fly out with them on 21 November.

Vaughan was awarded a central contract in September but left out of the two Test series starting in India on 11 December and took a three-month break.

He is keen to force his way back into the squad for the series' against the West Indies and Australia in 2008.

But does Vaughan still have a future in Test cricket?

Winning tests is what a captain is appointed for. That is his job.
He lives and dies by winning and losing tests.
Some great players have tried to captain England and couldn`t cope.
Vaughan was an excellent captain...

Cricket is a game of stats...you have quoted Vaughans stats since his form has been poor(as happens with every player at some stage).
But you haven`t given me his stats as England captain. Think you`ll find its one of the best if not the best. (that is captains who actually captained for more than a match or two)

He is a very good captain but unfortunatly he lacks the form to merit a place in the test XI. If he regained his form then yes but then again who would he replace? Collingwood?

"But you haven`t given me his stats as England captain. Think you`ll find its one of the best if not the best. "

That's rubbish. Vaughan's performance as a batsman has gone south after he became captain. In fact he was retained in the side, specifically because of his so-called captaincy skills.

And his captaincy is also rated high because he played a large number of Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand and the Windies.

Against the rest, he has a very poor captaincy record, having lost series to Pakistan, South Africa, India and Sri Lanka (twice, away).

So post captaincy, Vaughan has been poor both as a batsman as well as skipper.

Vaughan was an innovative and fearless captain. He was brilliant.

"So post captaincy, Vaughan has been poor both as a batsman as well as skipper".

That doesn`t really make any sense.

His record as a captain is as good as it gets.
Yes his batting suffered when he recieved the captaincy but the team won test matches.

And that is what its all about.

"His record as a captain is as good as it gets."

NO. Only against the lowly BD, NZ and Windies. Against the rest Vaughan has led them to defeats against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, South Africa. Not a good record at all.

"Yes his batting suffered when he recieved the captaincy but the team won test matches."

Refer above. Only against the weak teams.

His record as captain is superb. Unbeaten in Tests in 2004. beating South Africa away and Australia at home.

You seem to have forgotten the series win in South Africa and the Ashes win....

whatever causes a player to permanently lose his touch, which you have to think is the case with Vaughan, it is very rare for it to return and there is no reason to believe it will in this case.

I think he will.

I think once he's gotten over the captaincy thoughts he can just concentrate on batting and will return to form.
