Feeling the pinch

Othertype
comment on the article

Golf has given the first sign that it is feeling the global economic squeeze, with the Ladies' European Tour being forced to cancel the Indian Masters tournament next month for financial reasons.

Given the way that things are going, do you think that this could just be the start of an increasingly common trend across sport of all kind? Are you confident that golf has the financial strength to weather the storm? Or do you think that maybe the top level prize money is excessive anyway, and it's time the sport took a reality check?

Your thoughts and opinions please...

Good post Kwini and you're right re. the "fat cats" of the Tours c.f. the journeymen trying to earn a living.

Personally, I've always hated the appearance money paid to "top" players just for turning up. It's long been a nasty cancer in the game.

I'd agree with that, the appearence money thing should be scrapped, and there should be a tier for prize money related to the prestige of the tournament so it doesn't get out of hand (if it hasn't already!)

Golf will propably be OK as the main sponsors are looking at their Target Markets and Golf is a sport that appeals to the ABC1's thus ensuring a steady market. The sport is also massive in the Far East,India and now the Sheiks are getting involved so I doubt we will see a cashflow problem when it comes to Sponsorship.

The Ladies game is a different kettle of fish - had Michelle Wie stayed focussed then there would no doubt have been more interest but without a steady growth of Lady Superstars in the Woods,Garcia ilk then i'm afarid their tour will have more problems.

In any business suffering a reduction in demand, salaries are cut, so why not for these golfers who can earn a million dollars in a weekend?

If it wasn't for television, they would be playing for drinking money. And who the hell spends hours watching other people playing golf anyway?

Tiggertoo

I think that one of the first reactions to 'the crunch' will be customers cancelling thier Sky TV contracts.
In the UK golf and football have sold out to the telly god and I think it will come back to bite them.
If nobody watches a sport there will be no money.

Appearance money, imo, should be shared equally between all those who start in the tournament. On the pro-am day, usually Wednesday, all the pro's play an equal part in support of the sponser.
They will all incure expences, and without all of them, there would not be an event.
How many of us pay to go to a golf tournament in support of of someone we know. Do the powers that be, not realise that it's not just the big names that pull in crowds. There are many events I have been to that seem to have been supported by half the members from my club, just because a couple of our ex juniors are fighting to make their way on the tour. No, we hadn't paid to see Monty scowling at everyone, just to support our boys.
However, the greed of certain of the prima donnas will continue, they call the shots.

How did they become "Fat Cats"? They worked hard and dedicated themselves to their profession. So they have now earned the right to now be rewarded for this. Maybe there is an element of envy floating around.
