MLB awards season: Who's your MVP?

comment on the article
Philadelphia celebrate winning the World Series

It's that time of year again - when there are more awards being given out in Major League Baseball than you can shake a stick at.

We've already had:

Comeback Player of the Year (NL: Brad Lidge, AL: Cliff Lee)
Roberto Clemente Award (Albert Pujols)
Hank Aaron Award (NL: Aramis Ramirez, AL: Kevin Youkilis)
Delivery Man of the Year Award (Brad Lidge)
Clutch Performer of the Year (CC Sabathia)
and all the Gold Gloves in both leagues.

Still to come, we've got all the Silver Sluggers in both leagues, and most importantly of all, the "Big Four":

Manager of the Year
Rookie of the Year
Cy Young Award
Most Valuable Player

So, who would be your picks for the "biggies"?

How about some different categories...

1. Pirates (Trading Nady and Marte for Jose Tabata and minor league right-handers Dan McCutchen, Jeff Karstens and Ross Ohlendorf)

2. I say this every season; the biggest disappointment is sitting down at PNC, looking over pittsburgh from the Ballpark, then having to watch that dross out on the field!

3. Matt Morris. More than $10m for a dozen or so innings...

4. Giradi - NY Press were all over the Mets for missing the playoffs

5. The rays player with the mitochondrial disorder, meaning he can't last a game...

6. The Johnny Damon, it balances on top of the wall no HR verses the mets... Or the Pirates beating the Yanks smiley

The results are in - and the MVPs are:

Albert Pujols and Dustin Pedroia.

What does everyone think>

Suprised at the margin of Pedroia's win.Would love to pair him with a young David Eckstein up the middle.Hustle,hustle,hustle.

Biggest surprises to me in that vote were A-Rod being top 10 and F-Rod getting a first place vote! Pedroia definately deserved it though.

I think that the MVP should go to the player who not necessarily has the most exceptional stats but to someone that makes a true difference to a team and gets them somewhere special.

Howard's achievement this season was not great personal stats but without him, the Phill's would not have made it to the post season and ultimately winning it all. I dispute the fact that RBI's is not an important stat. Ultimately, Howard hit at the right time to get the runs in and without runs in your not going to win games. I say he was just saving his enery for the right moments.

Don't get me wrong Pujols is one of my favorite players but his achievement is a personal one more than getting his team anywhere special.

I agree with both selections, I can understand the Pujols not getting his team anywhere statement but if I was going to go for a playoff team player I would go with Utley not Howard.

As I said earlier you can't give the MVP to a guy who had statistically (outside HR and RBI) the worst year of his career. The Phils made it to the playoffs last year, Howard was better than this year and he wasn't getting as much talk for MVP. People clearly were looking at his HR and RBI totals, VORP, WARP-3 and OPS are stuch better stats to judge a player on.
I agree that without Howard the Phils wouldn't have made the post season, but without Utley they would have been far worse.

I would never partner Pedroia and Eckstein, Eckstein is an average baseball player and Pedroia is a very good one.
Eckstein has no upside.

With hindsight,I bet the Sox wished they never let Eckstein go,due to their shortstop troubles of the last few seasons. He might be average now but was pretty good in his prime. He reminds me of Pedroia, not just his size, but the way he plays the game with 100% effort.

The funniest Pedroia comment I heard this year was one time where he was standing next to David Ortiz (possibly in the on-deck circle).

It was remarked by one of the commentators that he looked like Ortiz's bat boy!

Eckstein has never been anything other than an average baseball player, yes the Red Sox have SS issues (although Jed Lowrie is possibly a v.good SS) but Eckstein would have never been any better.
He doesn't give you anything either at the plate or in the field, yes he plays at 100% day in day out, but that still only makes him average. There are loads of SS I would rather have than Eckstein:
Furcal, Escobar, Tejada, Jeter, Wilson, H. Ram, Rollins, Betancourt, Cabrera, Drew, Hardy, Lowrie, Guzman, Peralta.
To name a few.
