On their website just now - they have confirmed that both Alonso and Piquet Jnr will be their drivers next season.

Alonso signed for 2009 and 2010, and Piquet Jnr for 2009.

Well I hope that next year Renault will be like in 05/06 and actually challenge more. I mean it would be great to see more than just two or sometimes three players challenging as it is usually just two teams that really have what it takes to win whilst this would change that. I don't understand why Ferrari didn't take Alonso in, I mean in my opinion he is probably the best driver out there and if he had the right car he would prove that.

Slip,
"The Ferrari argument is a non starter. Regardless of what he says he doesnít drive for them, hasnít signed for them and for some very strange reason, no negotiations are forthcoming. I wonder why?"
Your argument is that Alonso doesn't want a competitive team mate, however you have given any facts about it. In my opinion, he wants a quick team mate and probably in Ferrari he would find a very talented team mate. However, you dismiss it and keep saying that Fernando wouldn't like a competitive driver as team mate. When Kovy signed by MM a year ago British press pointed out that Fernando did not want a quick driver next to him. However, Kovy is now criticized by many posters in this forum when a year ago he was a match for Fernando and could't continue in Renault according to many pundits. Of course, it was published in British press and I'm still waiting for evidences of Alonso asking for preferential treatment in any team where he has been (Renault or MM).

I thought Lewis had a pleasant season in regards of a competitive teammate. Mclaren has designed this strategy quite well, prepare the boy, get a real driver to develop the car, make Alonso's life a living hell and disrespect a 2 times world champ and finaly put a soft driver on lewis side, win and make a great business. Last season Fernando got in trouble because he does not lick ass to anybody, specialy to Dennis. Lewis is a good driver, but with his performances he has showed that is still a rookie. I would like to see him winning races in a Renault or dreaming about retiring Shumi.

You would think that Lewis and MM had saved the world!!!!!
I dont know what all the hype and fuss is about. Renault have been there, done it and won both championships at the same time, twice!

I'm going to be checking out the odds on an Alonso title win next season. If he'd had this car all year he'd have been right up there.

Fernando looks lovely in blue, so I think he's made the right decision to stay with Renault.

"Sheff,
can you tell me who Alonso has vettoed to be his team mate?
British press has said he wouldn't like HK but they never bring facts only speculate."

The point I was making is that the British press has never actually mentioned mentioned Alonso vetoing a teammate to my knowledge and that such theories are exclusively the preserve of internet crackpots.

"We are happy to confirm both Fernando and Nelson for next season"

Disgraceful nepotism at its most sordid, Piquet Jr. is easily amongst the worst 4 or 5 drivers on the track.

No surprise that a driver of such limited ability has been kept...after all, we all know what happens when Fernando Alonso races a teammate capable of beating him from time to time...<whistle>

The only good job Piquet did as I remember was stuffing it in the wall in Singapore just after Alonso had pitted and thus propelling him into an unassailable lead!
