Programme notes

comment on the article
Danny Baker

Friends, Romans, Countrymen,

There is, it is said, no off position on the Genius Switch and that is why tonight another great 606 quest gets launched even though we currently have approaching 5,881 already under review.

We now appeal for examples of the Most Consistently Limp Programme Notes by a Manager.

My own side, Millwall, once had a manager called Bob Pearson. He wasn't manager for long. Indeed some of my friends insist he was only in charge from three till four one Wednesday afternoon in March 1985.

This cannot, however be true.

I can definitely recall his Programme Notes which arrived on page three of the match day brochure under the transparently bogus headline of "Pearson Says His Piece". Now Bob seemed like a nice enough fellow. It was not his fault that, during one of the Lions' frequent crises of backroom confidence, he had surprisingly been promoted from chief scout to team manager almost, it seemed, against his will.

Nobody had ever heard of him before. Or indeed since.

For the few weeks Bob "controlled" the team the "Pearson Says His Piece" column was accompanied by an unfortunate photo of him standing beside the large blue gates that used to announce the New Cross boundary of the old Den. Actually when I say, "standing beside" a truer description would be "slumped against". Thunderstruck and goggle-eyed, Bob looked like he had been left Millwall in his great uncle's will and had just glimpsed the balance sheet.

His programme notes were not so much a Call to Arms as a Cry For Help.

Anyway, who else seems to dictate their match day comments in their kip? Flat uninspired prose, repetition, poor analogies, clichés and of course, those chummy, usually failed pun, names for the column.

There will also be much reflection on Life After Football now that we know former Premier League hero Jonathan Hunt is now a Horse Whisperer. An Equine Healer no less.

What larks Pip!

1912: Barcelona versus Basle. Doesn't seem very fair to me. They need to start handicapping in the Champions League. Barca, for example, can field only nine players until Basle take the lead.

Maybe Basle needs Sybil to help!!!!

Diego Maradona new Argentine coach... that's handy! But he must learn that the white lines are not to be sniffed at!

RE: Paul Fletcher @ 1906: You mentioned that el Diego is quite popular with the Argentine people (true) but in recent polls theres been an overwhelming majority of people saying he is the absolute wrong choice for the job, specially when you have more experienced managers like San Lorenzo's Miguel Angel Russo, the currently unemployed but still brilliant Carlos Bianchi, or the Under 23's manager Sergio Batista (a gold medal winner in Beijing). I honestly don't know what the AFA were thinking but it can only be described as a massive gamble.
