Calzaghe Jones: Official Thread

What to make of the final head to head then fellas? It all looked a bit flat up there, there's no needle and neither really tried to strike the final psychological hammer blow. After a lot of thought I think that even at this late stage in the game Roy Jones has whipped himself into good enough shape to win six rounds and make this close. I fancy him to hurt Joe early, perhaps a few times and Joe to take the majority of the middle rounds. If Joe's had bother making weight as has been reported then he'll tire enough for Roy to take one or two of the late rounds and leave this hanging in the balance at the bell. If I had to bet my life then it's Joe on points but playing the averages I'll be popping some cash on Jones to get the judge's nod and the dreaded draw, worth a punt I'd say. Jones to be the dynamic powerful fighter, Joe the steadier more industrious, bit like the first Pacman JMM fight. Hope it's a good one and I'm still sober enough to see it come fight time!!

Hard 'Nard, Lennox and Forrest like Roy by decision. Hatton, Oscar and Pacquiao like Calzaghe over the distance. Winky thinks Roy is gonna knock Calzaghe out.Mosley thinks he would have once but not now and Joe's the man to pick.
Regardless of odds it would appear most are split over this fight which has a buzz surrounding it I didn't think we'd be witnessing when it was first inked. The weigh in today may offer up more clues as to the likely winner, body language can sometimes give the game away. I now can't wait for tomorrow night, I wasn't expecting to be looking forward to the fight this much but as it draws near I think we're in for a great night and hopefully an exciting fight between these two veterans.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Well Joe and Roy came nose to nose last night and a couple of things were noticeable, firstly, say what you like about Calzaghe but he's one mean son of a gun when it comes down to it and refuses to be intimidated by anyone, he's game. Also, is it me or does Roy actually look really old, older even than his years suggest? I'm also not sure if he has a plan for when the bell rings either, from the snippets he's put forward-the former genius seems to be playing it by ear, which will either bring astounding results or leave him floundering when Calzaghe puts his foot down. I'm heavily leaning towards Calzaghe as of today, too much pressure, too insistent. As Evander Holyfield proved in his first fight with Lennox, it's all well and good speaking of God guiding you, but unless you have an intelligent gameplan (as Evander adopted for the rematch), you're likely to end up in trouble.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday of fight week is pretty quiet, the calm before the media blitz. The news is populated with Obama v McCain, can the old battle worn American hero defy the oddsmakers? Same deal here and trying to solve which of them will have their hand held high after the bell becomes almost an obsession for an anorak like myself.
Calzaghe's soundbites are eerily reminiscent of little Naz's when he fought Barrera. Looking toward his legacy, how he wouldn't like to be compared to Louis or Marciano in terms of title reigns and records. Much talk of his family and life away from boxing.
I'd be surprised if he's overlooking Jones however, one of Joe's strengths has been his ability to keep his feet on the ground, if anything he underestimates himself, which ensures he's always on the ball.
That dodgy barnet has gone also, well done Joe!!

Morning chaps, was thinking of slapping up a post for all posters to add on to, if this week's like any other big fight week involving a Brit we'll be bombarded with post after post, which kinda clogs the system up and the debate suffers.
As long as people don't take umbrage I'll keep this up top and everyone can have their two penneth worth in the same place.

Quick observations from a scour of this morning's related news:

Every picture tells a story and I like to have a good look at the head to head pictures fight week to try and gauge how each man is looking/feeling etc (the picture of Hopkins defiantly shoving his mush into Pavlik's face should have rang alarm bells before that fight!!). The picture on eastsideboxing sees Joe looking the picture of confidence, the cat that got the cream in fact, whereas Roy does look a much older version of the image projected on the poster behind him. I wonder if this will be reflected on fight night. The real question surrounding this bout is which Jones shows up?

Also, former Jones victim James 'Lights Out' Toney, a man who's never short of an opinion is predicting a knockout for Jones within four or five rounds. He's also predicting a win for Barrett over Haye mind you, he doesn't seem to rate the Brits too highly!!

Should be a 24 hour forum on big fight night.

This fight is not like Louis/Marciano which was a foregone conclusion. No one gave Louis a chance.

It should be noted that a lot of people/seasoned observers are picking Jones. As indeed a lot of people are picking Calzaghe.

So if Jones loses, does his legacy suffer, as he is seen by many as very much a 'live' opponent?

Opinion seems to be quite divided on who will win this.

Do you think RJJ is worth a few quid?

You can get 5/2 on the exchanges.

Probably about 3am hypisa_haircut

I think this could turn out to be the fight of the decade, but I can't tell either way who'll win.
My head's not sure but my heart says Roy Jones. Jones is one of the best boxers I've ever ever watched, I loved watching him during the 90's.
I think it'll come down to fitness on the night though and it sounds like Calzaghe is struggling to make weight.

note to self - remember and set the alarm for 2am
