The Greatest Race Ever??

Formula One

Under the circumstances of this incredible day, it is hard to look beyond this race. One things for sure, this was the greatest title decider in f1 history. Who would have thought that the drivers championship would come down to the last corner, of the last lap of the last race of the season?? No one could have predicted that even two weeks ago. I have never seen a climax quite like it and I can say right here, right now that that was one of the finest sporting occasions I have ever had the pleasure of watching. We all remember the great moments. The Champions League Final 2005, the Ashes in the same year, this years Wimbledon Final, Usain Bolt in the Olympics..... this Grand Prix can be included in those great sporting moments.... well as an f1 fan first and a football fan 2nd, it certainly tops it for me.

P.S - Whilst we congratulate our hero Lewis Hamilton, we must also send commiserations to the absolutely wonderful Felipe Massa. After the barrage of stick he got at the start of the season he has played his part in one of the greatest ever f1 world championships and missed out by the skin of his teeth. He really has shut his critics up for good and he will be back next year, ready to fight Lewis and I'm sure various other drivers for that oh so elusive crown.

I know what your getting at, but if u take the race without the world championship and the points it was a pretty poor race.

But...because it was the last race, because Hamilton stole the world championship on the last corner having lost it....it was the most DRAMATIC race ever and most DRAMATIC champiosnhip

I would say that this is the second greatest climax to a championship in motorsport that I have seen - Dario Franchitti's last lap win in the final race of the Indycar Championship last year shades it, mainly due to the fact that both contenders were fighting for the lead until the last lap.

I almost feel sorry for Massa, but not at all for Ferrari. Quite the opposite.

To be honest, Hamilton won in Belgium and was already champion before Brazil.

Massa has been very good all year, even though I feel his car is better than Hamilton's. Kovaleinan has showed that the McLaren isn't a great car. Well done to him all the same.

I agree this is the most 'amazing' climax to an F1 season, but it only came about because it was orchestrated by the FIA. Too many dodgy decisions against Hamilton this year ruined the sport, and although all's well that ends well, I was ready to say goodbye to F1.

Lets hope that next year will be better, fairer, and less farcical.

Well done Lewis and McLaren, how I laughed when Ferrari were celebrating! A taste of your own medicine springs to mind.

Actually McFerrari more like the 99 Champions League. Boring for 95% of the race and euphoric in the last two minutes.smiley

I feel sorry for the genuine supporters of Massa (not the booboys) as it is not nice to have the championship snatched away on the last corner. I know because I was inconsolable when Vettel passed Hamilton. He certainly made a case for staying at Ferrari. However, for me the most deserving driver won not least for the ridiculous decision at Spa, not that Massa had anything to do with that.

Congratulations too to Ferrari for developing the best car. Should be a great contest next year with Toro Rosso, BMW and Renault closing in on the big two.

It's a bit churlish to suggest this wasn't a great race. For sure most of it was a parade but then F1 has got a bit like that (it's what you get when you put the fastest man at the front), and it's only when unusual circumstances such as rain interveen that it gets exciting.
THIS race certainly got exciting.
It doesn't matter if you are red or silver, I'm betting that like me you found yourself on the edge of your seat a few times.

Lets hope the new rules for 2009 keep us there.

Just a few bugbears...

This was a far more amazing sporting event than any Champions league Final. Neither Man United or Liverpool qualified for the competition as champions...and their respective victories in 99 and 05 only appeal in the main to fans of the clubs themselves. Note my opinion is based on my view that the champions league is a farce.

Some one also commented that the McClaren was not a good car, as shown by Kovalainen. In my opinion this is more down to Kovalainen himself than the car. With Alonso, Vettel, kubica or any other number of drivers from down the grid, that car would also have been in the title race.

I personally would have preferred a controversial finish a la Prost/Senna, Schumacher/Hill or Villeneuve, although i admit the ending was incredible.

This could be the last exciting season for a while as if F1 loses anymore teams over the summer, the sport will become a pointless procession.

I can only dream of a return to the eighties bliss of 30 car grids, turbo engines and wide cars!

I feel really sorry for felipe Massa i really wanted him to win simply because he might never get another chance to win a world title whereas hamilton will probably win more titles, But hopefully felipe and ferrari can learn from this seasons mistakes that cost them the title and come back much stronger next season however if a ferrari driver is to winb the title next season i expect it to be kimi raikkonen

Sorry guys, but there is so little info on what happened to Glock. He lost 18 seconds on that final lap.... dodgy, dodgy, dodgy is all I can say. Maybe he has something Massa, or maybe he is Lewis mate, or maybe he just wanted to play a part in the destination of the title (in a really sad way IMO)

I really do have sour taste in the mouth. In my opinion Massa is the better driver, and if Glock was playing silly beggers, the Brazilan undoubtedly deserved the title.

On the broadcast here in the states they mentioned that before they changed the points system in 2002 (in response to Schumacher's dominance), Massa would have won this year's championship with the 2000 points structure by 8 points.
But then the final race wouldn't have been anywhere near as exciting and intense as it was. Hamilton won more points with THIS points-structure system, end of story. Sure, Massa has more wins, more fast laps, and more pole positions, but it all comes down to points-per-race and not points-per-performance, and congrats to the new champion. Massa may have been a better racer in 2008, but there is no doubt Hamilton is the new champion.

Steven633 (U13671173) I'm sorry you are utterly ridiculous. Tell me one good reason why Glock would slow down for Hamilton??? Come on! Or maybe it had something to do with him being on dry tyres on a wet track?? Thus meaning no traction and the car feeling like it's on ice going up a hill methinks, no??? Dimwit. If you'd look at the stats mate you'd have seen Glock do a 1 minute 44 lap that time around, Trulli (his teammate since you know so little) did, oh look at that a 1 minute 44! Also methinks you go back to Silverstone and find Barrichello doing a lap 19 seconds faster than Hamilton whilst on full wets whilst Hamilton was on inters, no? Idiot. Laughable idiot! laugh
