Australia v England

World Cup
comment on the article

Hello all,

It's here. The big one. Australia v England at the World Cup.

The old rivals renew hostilities at the Telstra Dome at 0855 GMT, and the anticipation is reaching fever pitch.

England's pack looks to be at least the equal of their Aussie counterparts - but it's the backline that is causing England fans sleepless nights, with the exciting Israel Folau and Greg Inglis likely to test Keith Senior and Martin Gleeson to the full.

Can England do it? Or will they be keeping their powder dry, with the two teams likely to meet again later in the tournament?

Who will be the stars of the show in Melbourne?

And how good are Inglis and Folau? Not to mention Australia's masterful half-back pairing Jonathan Thurston and Darren Lockyer...

Let me know your predictions and thoughts on the match.

I'm a bit out of touch with league but watching the match it seemed to me that England played well below themselves. When Australia were running the ball up the defence seemed flat-footed or static, giving the Australians time to run the angles and make ground. The English seemed to give the Australians too much credit instead of trusting themselves. I look forward to England playing the game they are capable of.

It makes me laugh to read all these comments. We bottled it in the forwards, the only two forwards who came out with any positives were Roby and Graham. Morley, Peacock,Ellis,Sinfield were dire, they only thing they did was tackle. When we were attacking they played like muppets. The aussies forwards should how to turn and offload in the tackle, when necessary, their backs did the same, they promoted the ball unlike us. They are bigger, faster and more skillful in every department, they more capable of creating things from any situation. Perhaps, we believe our own media to much.To the drawing board again I think!

'Haha still laughing yet when I seen the score god between cricket and now this how lower can England get'

You also conviniently forgot to mention the rugby union world cup and oh... a small matter of us finishing higher than you at the Olympics. So all things considered, I would say its pretty equal between the nations. winkeye

I am delighted. Being an Aussie who was born and living in England I have to take a lot of ribbing when England (or anyone else) beat Australia.

I suppose it is only to be expected, given that England success is such a rarity, every time it happens they have to crow about it for the next 50 years.

the thing that realy annoyed me is why take only 4 specialist props.then play peacock at second row......is smith thick.why not have morley and peacock at 8 and 10 doing the hard yards which there good at,then let fa'asavalu and graham rampage off the bench.lee smith for full-back and westwood a tackling machine or jjb at second row and still have hock off the bench.they didnt seem to have any enthusiasm from the start,it could be the heat taking there energy who knows.not knocking the lads cause i could never do what they do i just think smith needs a few obvious changes.our forwards work so why not leave them as they are!!!!!

JohnArmagh,

I to was delighted whilst watching the Aussies ripping in and giving it to the Pommies, because I have some very good mates from England and we always give it to each other big time, as you do!!

But more then anything I love this great game of rugby league and unfortunately what was dished up by the England forwards last night wasn't exceptable for international football and it took our game back ten years as far as a spectators opinion, the so-called lesser nations have performed with courage and commitment and should be proud of themselves.

I truly expected the likes of Morley and Peacock to come out and really dish it up to Petro and Price and Co.
"anyway not much point going on because we all seen what happened"

I just hope the Pommie forwards show some pride and get stuck into N-Z and then go on to make the final and show us what we all know they are capable of.
ok

Sorry, but the Rugby league World Cup is a joke. Not because there are a lot of weak teams in it, but because there is basically only one side who can win it, as has been the case for decades. And what is Britain's solution to the problem of how to beat Australia? Combine the UK and Europe into one "super team" to at least make it more interesting (like the Ryder Cup)? Nope, split the GB team into Home International sides filled, it seems, with players not quite good enough to play for England or Australia.
As for England v Australia, well, it wasn't match 2 of a 3 match series was it, so there was no reason for the Aussies to go easy smiley

Oh come on mate. Take the beating on the chin!

If you want to get technical Australia and England are nearly dead on even when it comes to the olympics, say nothing of population size, and are far more successful in every other sport, bar soccer... just give it a few years laugh

HA! Aussies never take a beating on the chin - whenever you get a little stick back all I ever hear is a load of whingeing (and you say were bad). Stop going on about the tired old population size - if the UK had Australia's weather than maybe, but as we don't we don't have as many people who participate in sport as we would do otherwise.

However I do partly agree about soccer. I think the Australian team is under rated. I do however think the kiwis are rather annoyed that you left them in the lurch smiley
