India v Australia

International Tests
comment on the article

Welcome to the BBC thread for the final day of the third and penultimate Test between India and Australia in Delhi.

With India leading by 79 runs for the loss of two second innings wickets, a draw remains the most likely result.

But Australia, buoyed by the manner in which they dominated day three with bat and then ball, will believe they have an outside chance of snatching victory.

In the space of 24 hours, India have gone from a position of domination to one of slight uncertainty.

Who would have thought a team that posted over 600 in their first innings could face the possibility of defeat?

Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid return to the crease having led their side to 43-3 by stumps on day four.

If the match is drawn, Australia will go to Nagpur needing a victory to level the series. If Australia win then all three outcomes remain possible in the series. And if India win they will take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Enjoy day five and let us know your thoughts on the action...

Sure, look who is talking.

It is time the Aussies stop talking up people and concentrate on cricket, because that is what they are looking poor at. It is sad that they have to resort to ask Gilly to publish the parts of his book that disses Indians, so that it creates negativity in the Indian media.

Too many mind games, Ponting. Now you are looking a little bit sissy and foolish. Please improve your game and bring some fight to Nagpure.

One thing is sure. This next test is the most important and interesting thing going on in world cricket at the moment. The other shenanigans going on om BBC cricket pages right now are not cricket.

There is only one thing I don't like about cricket in India, which is that it takes place at hours inconvenient to me. So.. flat earth - yes! flat pitches - no! - Can't wait for this showdown between P̣nting & Dhoni.

Absolutely typical that Ponting comes out with 'why didn't they just throw their wickets away so we could win?' He just can't take being outdone.

So everyone is coming out and slating the aussies, indians, english whoever. Is it just me or have the indians only actually won 1 out of 3 tests in a home series on the sub continent where pitches have forever been know to favour them?

If Oz wins the 4th test then the series will be drawn and australia will retain the trophy away from home! When was the last time anyone beat or drew a test series with australia in australia???

Yes the indians have dominated the last 2 tests but they are playing in there own backyard and are still in danger of not regaining the Border-Gavaskar trophy!

Indian fans and players may THINK that they have the best team in the world and that the sport was invented just for them, but I am afraid that until you beat Oz both home and away and put together a string of series VICTORIES then you have no basis for your claims.

As for the Brits giving it to the aussies, if you have not even got the bottle to even make a contest of a oneoff 20/20 match for cash how are you possibly going to compete in the pressure cooker that is the Ashes next year?

Davico05....your statements are a load of rubbish..you think the Indians think of themselves as being the best in the world is rubbish. They clearly know who the best is and that is Australia. What they can boast about, is the fact that they are one of only a 2 teams in the owrld that can challenge the aussies....The indians did it in Australia and are doing it once more in India. If it was not for Bias Umpiring in Australia the test result would have been different....One thing is for sure...your world cricketing dominace is nearing to an end.

Ponting is rapidly becoming a joke. In both the last two tests India scored significantly faster than Oz (3.8 runs per over compared to 3.2 runs per over in the first innings in Delhi) yet he complains about the slow India scoring rate! Did he really expect India to go for a win with only one day left and effectively 79 for 2?

Ponting needs to put up or shut up. He's been a successful captain but has also presided over one of the most unsporting teams in test history (with the exception of the admirable Brett Lee) and is being found out now he no longer has Mcgrath and Warne.
