Gentelmen's agreement

World Cup Scotland

Does anyone know why the SFA have this gentlemen's agreement with the other Home Nations not to play players without a Scottish granny?
I don't really understand why it matters what Wales, Northern Ireland or England are planning on doing. Surely we either decide as a country to play players like Novo or we don't. What the Welsh FA thinks shouldn't come into it.

Also I always thought a gentlemen's agreement was along the lines of "what happens in Amsterdam stays in Amsterdam".

Great stuff!! Why would G Burley want to call someone...or anyone for that matter, up to the squad who cannot get a game for the team anyway. Novo is the best below par player there is, he will not set the heather on fire when playing against international defenders. Perhaps he will get into the spanish squad?? LOL laugh

Andrew Driver should be allowed to play for Scotland, he has live here since he was like 14 and played for Scottish Schoolboys.

Novo has been living and playing professional football in Scotland longer than Andrew Driver so surely by that logic he should also get to play for the national team.

It seems to me that most people on here who don't want Novo for Scotland either hate him for being a Rangers player or simply don't rate him. Neither should come into the debate over eligibility. He should be eligible IMO but whether or not he should play should go on form and ability like any other player. IMO he is good enough to be a Scotland squad player and is no worse a player than Iwelumo or Clarkson. Of course being at Rangers amongst a massive pool of strikers he is never going to start as regularly as those mentioned above but that should not in itself rule out a good player.

Novo is a decent player and I wouldnt mind him pulling on the Scotland shirt(im a celtic fan)I think it is just the principle of having someone playing for Scotland who has absolutely no bloodline, I think Iwelumo is often criticised when people are talking about Boyd or Novo, people need to realise Iwelumo is an excellent player,ok he had a bad miss, but get over it!!!

If we can pick some one from the great clan name Iwelumo, Then way can't we not pick Novo after all at least he has set foot within scotland for the past 8 years or so, which can't be said about a lot of the "supposed" scottish players we have picked.

Iwelumo was born in scotland and his mother is Scottish, his father also spent most of his life in Scotland,so to compare him with Novo is extremely rediculous. Although Im not against Novo representing my country!!

The idea of Almunia playing for England does make me laugh - based on his current form he wouldn't even get into my local pub team! Where did that rubbish rumour even come from?

Good of Novo to come out and say it's been blown out of proportion and he respects the views of the SFA etc.

Hopefully we can draw a line under the issue now.

Ho wmany times do I have to post this...

The ONLY reason a gentleman's agreement is in place between the home nations is so FIFA don't turn us all into a Team GB.

Think how unfair it is for the rest of Europe if Scotland, Wales, NI or England could choose any player with a British passport to play for them... Most of Europe would see this as an unfair advantage (particularly for the smaller home nations). Norway don't have the pick of any Scandanavian players do they? Latvia can't pick players with Russian passports...

If we started playing any old Brit for Scotland then the fact is, the rest of Europe would start moaning... and before we know it, we're team GB (God forbid).

There's just no way this Novo thing can work until we are an independent Scotland... (with our own Scottish passports)
