What are you looking out for in Manchester?

Thomas and Wiggins ride the madison

My finger’s going to be on the red button this weekend for the opening leg of this season’s track cycling World Cup in Manchester .

As the first of five events leading up to the 2009 World Champs, it doesn’t have massive significance in itself but of course it’s the first time the GB boys and girls have been in action on the track since combining for 12 Olympic medals in Beijing.

As Victoria Pendleton points out, the line-up might have contained far fewer star names were it not in Manchester and the stars are unlikely to be at peak form but that doesn’t mean it won’t be exciting.

Pendleton will defend her honour in the sprint – sporting some flash new kit sponsored by another television company – but other Beijing stars will try their hands at different disciplines.

It will be interesting to see how team pursuiter Geraint Thomas gets on with Bradley Wiggins in Sunday afternoon’s Madison, for instance.

I’m looking forward to having a further look at the likes of Jason Kenny (who this part-time fan hadn’t heard of before he gave Chris Hoy a fright at the Laoshan Velodrome) and some of the women who didn’t get a chance to shine in Beijing because of an outdated programme that offers the men more events.

Then there’s the Japanese Keirin Association invitation event, with £10,000 on offer to the winner and a real air of testosterone about it.

What will you be looking out for this weekend?

An end to the British media's unhealthy obsession with indoor cycling.

If you want to cycle go OUTDOORS!

The audio delay was fantastic when the Russian lads crashed in the team pursuit.
It was like the commentators didn't notice, and maybe someone had to tell them.

Even weirder, when the audio did catch up, it turned out that Hugh Porter had said the only way the Dutch could win was if the Russians crashed - which the Russians immediately did!

And yes, I have lost my mind.
Some track events are barmy. Earlier on, I was cheering the Danish team pursuit squad. I didn't want the GB team to catch the Danes, because if they did then the race would be over, and the GB team couldn't break any records.

Makes no sense.

Just watched Jason Kenny winning the sprint on his back, struck me, how come their outfits don't include hip, elbow and shoulder pads?

Morning all , I think it's an absolute disgrace that the coverage of this event is so limited ......It's the one sport where GB are miles ahead of the rest of the world , that may be a little insular but hell I like to see us do well , it's nice to be able to cheer us on

I can't believe the coverage is so rubbish after all the adulation in the Olympics.

NOTHING in The Sunday Times.
NOTHING on Radio 5 Live.
6 measley column inches in Saturdays Manchester Evening News.

Whats going on ????

Well in my entirely subjective opinion, there's been more coverage of the Manchester World Cup event than there was of the World Championship in Manchester last March!

There was more interest in the Olympics, because it was the Olympics. A cycling gold medal does not attract as much public interest as an Olympic gold medal in cycling.

You might as well complain that cycling forums aren't as busy as they are during the Tour de France. This one, for example, is a lot quieter than it was during the Olympics.

QED?

I thought the coverage was good, including on the red button on Freeview on Saturday, but it wasn't flagged very well.
- I only found it with Hugh Porter and Jamie Staff commentating by accident!
- I had done a search on the BBC web-site, and only the Sunday BBC2 coverage was mentioned.

So once I found it then it was great!
