Newport v New Zealand 1963

Welsh Newport
comment on the article

It's the 45th anniversary of Newport's famous win over the great 1963 All Blacks.

We've got a feature on it here
, any memories of the match or thoughts on the game? Were you there?

So Stradey Park wasn't the only place the All Blacks ever lost...!!

I think what made the victory so special was the fact that no-one else beat them on the tour and (apparently) it was a very string NZ team fielded to. I say apparently as I'm only 16 so have only heared stories of that momentous day.

Good to see the BBC are covering the story. For many years it has appeared that the BBC (& many other's in the media) were obsessed with the Scarlets victory. Granted both victories are noteworthy but if you compare the Llanelli and Newport wins you could justifiably argue that Newport's acheivement was the greater, but has had far less media coverage. Newport beat a Kiwi team which was stronger, containing several All Black legends and had a far better tour record than the one Llanelli beat. I don't mean to disrespect the Llanelli acheivement but it does seem that the media fixation on that result has overshadowed several other victories by Welsh sides over the major touring sides. Like I said it is not just the BBC guilty of this - I note that the Western Mail has failed to note the anniversary of this match! Hopefully the BBC article is going to start to redress the balance.

I remember mitching off school to see the match ( I didn't go to school in Newport ) and what a filthy day it was. It was difficult to tell who was Newport and who was Kiwi by the end. When John Uzzell dropped the goal I thought he had missed , it skimmed so low. The thing I always remember is when Don Clarke charged into a ruck and hit it full tilt - the whole crowd let out a shocked 'Ooooooh' as if they felt it themselves. He was built like a BSH so it must have hurt someone. Great game despite the low score.

Iremember watching it on TV it was a fantastic win, conditions were terrible, but we won and a deserved win it was.Wouldn't it be great if we could have those long overseas tours back again.Well done NEWPORT from a Scarlets supporter.

Newport like Swansea have not banged on about beating the All Blacks. In 1963 The All Blacks lost 1 game, on the 1972-73 tour the All Blacks lost 7 games including games at the beating hearts of rugby Union; Workington and Birmingham.
Do the good people of Workington remind everyone daily that the AB's were beaten at their town? Do they also bang on about drinking the pubs dry?
Must be time for BBC Wales and Llanelli to start planning the 37th anniversary of them beating the AB'S.

The reason why not many people outside Newport and Swansea know a lot about these games is because the one eyed Turks talk a(little bit)more about their 'Famous Victory'

Llanlli,Swansea,Cardiff,Newport, plus
Munster and area English and French teams have all beaten All Black sides at one time or other.Newports victory was significant for 2 things the 1963-4 All Black side was undoubtly the best in the world. Those of 1935,53,and 73 were teams in rebuilding mode. The second point was the discipline of the side, which did not give The Boot[DON CLARKE] a chance to kick goals. That ment any where up to there own 10 metre line[65 metre kicks were his speciality].Later on tour this great goal kicker pulled a ham string playing Wales, and his goal kicking was off for the rest of the tour until the last match in England [barbrians when it came back].He was in great form again at home in 1964 but injury that year ended hid career.

Hawkes Bay beat the strongest French team to ever tour NZ and the 93 Lions :D
Sorry to hijack your thread but i take any chance to point out our strong record against touring international sides.

I'll be doing some research on the Newport win, i love the old stories of clubs beating the ABs. Its always treasured which is cool.
I feel the same way about the Bay.
Its a shame that the proper rugby tour no longer exists making these things near on impossible.

I think we all need to remember that llanelli beat the worst ever NZ touring team to come here and their second string midweek side at that.If you look back over history you will see that they are way behind Cdf and Npt on victories between the clubs but no doubt the welsh speaking scarlett luvvies that run bbc wales wouldn't agree.West cert isn't bestbiggrin

as well as Cdf and Npt beating Llanelli so many more times than Llanelli beating Cdf/Npt over the years I haven't noticed Llanelli/Scarletts beating the Springboks yet.Maybe the new "cathedral and spiritual home of welsh rugby" they have built will ensure that the great tradition of supplying future legends to the welsh side will continue? Nrly all GS players the last few years from Npt,Cdf,Swansea,Ponty,Bridgend aren't they?
