Essex
comment on the article

Alastair Cook has joined Mark Pettini in signing a two-year contract extension with Essex.

Do you welcome this news? Can the pair help Essex win promotion to Division One of the County Championship?

Cook's new contract does not really mean anything to Essex apart from some compensation from the ECB for his non-availability. If he is playing for Essex it's because his form has deserted him and he has lost his England place.

Essex went from the sublime to the ridiculous last season, mixing crushing wins (Middlesex got nutmegged from a position where you honestly believed that they could not conceivably lose), with 5 defeats. Certainly, as Middlesex seemed to be heading to an inevitable victory Mark Pettini (I keep confusing him with his father, Max, who I worked with some years back) was not exactly inspirational in the field; in fact, he came in for an awful lot of stick from the commentator. I get the impression that when things are going well on the field, Mark Pettini looks like Mike Brearley, but when they start going wrong it's more like Oliver Twist.

Overall, Essex looked to be a strike bowler short and their batting looked fragile at times.

I'm sure most cricket fans around the world were delighted for Tendulkars milestone - I was chuffed for him.
But what's it got to do with Alistair Cook ??

I think that she is saying that he is no Tendulkar... and he isn't, but he's done the job for England.

Its brilliant to see the cornerstones of the Essex team committing their futures to the club. I'm hoping this will be a massive season in all versions of the game. We certainly have the squad to make it big, I just hope England dont take too much of Bopara and Foster...

I don't know what Foster has done wrong, but despite brilliant performances with both gloves and bat this season, Englands loss is Essexs gain - but still harsh.

Who else is brave enough to stand up to the stumps when people like Napier, or any fast / medium bowler are steaming in.

Bopara continues to get overlooked in favour of Owais Shah, Dimi Mascherenas, etc but that could also be in Essexs best interests ?

Roll on the cricket season - but not while Norwich City are winning 5 - 2 biggrin

Bopara is ten times the player of Cook!! How can a player with England get you promoted anyway?? Moores doesn't have a clue what he's doing to exclude the very talented Ravi!

I am really pleased the likes of Cook and Pettini are signing. We need a bit of stability, I reckon promotion beckons.
