Swampy's son Marsh gets a go

comment on the article

So the great white hope of Australian cricket, Shaun Marsh, is the man the selectors have turned to as they replace the injured Phil Jaques.

It could have been Chris Rogers or Brad Hodge but Andrew Hilditch and his team feel the time is ripe to throw Marsh into the Test match arena.

(And if the Aussies fail to win the third Test there's every chance he'll get a go in the last one).

One thing that strikes me about Marsh, having only seen him in a couple of admittedly impressive IPL outings, is a low first class average in the mid-30s. Is that a potential problem for this "Son of Swampy"? (For those who don't know, his dad Geoff was an Aussie opener in the late 80s)

Isn't it just great to see Austrailia scratching round for a side. They are toothless without Warne and McGrath. The batting is also suspect but I think it is made to look worse by their inability to trouble the opposition batsmen. Anyway I love it. We all knew it was coming, Aussies just didn't want to face reality.

i really don't like where this australian team is heading the spinner white should not play shaun marsh i don't think fits the role of opener australia must show some confidence in the players they have at the moment hayden and katich are getting better they showed that with they're partnership johnson is getting places with bat and ball lee is really becoming and unbleieveable fast bowler calrke played well in the second innings haddin looks a good keeper and batsmen shane watson looks the part finally white has to go sorry but he does australia need a good spinner who will trouble the indians

Marsh is streets ahead of Katich IMHO as an opener

Katich is of more use than White

White has performed better than expected but is that good enough to keep Marsh out?

One thing is for sure, ths test series is a golden opportunity for some new faces in the Australian team to step up, make a name for themselves and stake their place in the side. At least one of them. Anyone of them? Please?

To be fair, Brad Hodge's average is elevated by the 203 and his short Test career thus far, and he has never played outside of Australia aside from the West Indies (Test, this is) so these may be factors. Nevertheless his first-class record is certainly impressive. Perhaps Australia are looking for a long term future player rather than a plaster fix of someone who is by now towards the end of his career (about 34 odd now I think he is)

From What i saw when the Aussies toured the West Indies Sean Marsh looked like a pretty decent batsman in the few matches that he played in. Indian conditions should be new to him since he plays in the IPL

Brad Hodge is definatly underated. He is a class act, not good enough to break into the Aussie batting line up of a couple of years ago, but as it stands today, he could definatly hold his own against a majority of them. Poor players do not score hundereds let alone big hundereds as Hodge has done for Aus in the past. I have not seen much of Marsh, but what i have seen has been good.

I do not see the point of Aus playing White, i think i saw in the last test that it was something crazy like the 71st over before he got a bowl. In India, your leading spinner should not have to wait 70odd overs to get a bowl. Either bowl him or get someone else in. His batting is not good enough to warrent his place if he cannot bowl. Get another spinner in to do the job, or use Clark as the spinner (which seems to be more and more the case anyway) and get another batter in there.

Looking forward to the ashes next year though, recon us poms will regain them in another top series, we both seem to raise our games considerably for these series.

Well he will not have any effect on the outcome of the series. it will be 2-0 India.

Hodge is another victim of TV exposure

This has been going on ever since Live TV is shown

Hodge failed in IPL and immediately branded as no good

Aus is hardly looking at thier own FC stats barring a reward and comeback to Katich

T20 is influencing everything and a plus 30 cricketer unless already experienced is a becoming an endangered species

Australia got bowled out for 268 & 195 in the 2nd Test, cheaply in anyones book. Cameron White contributed 5 & 1??!!

His "high quality" leg spin returned match figures of 3-119??!!

Hardly screams out to stay in the team. Michael Clarke is a better spinner in my opinion and March will contribute more than 6 runs in 2 innings!!
