Can Bangladesh rise up the rankings?

International Tests Bangladesh
comment on the article

Bangladesh were very close to victory against New Zealand at Chittagong.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cri...

A compelling match went to the final session before the Kiwis won by three wickets.

Historically, reaching a target in excess of 300 on the final day is never straightforward, but does New Zealand's struggle demonstrate their own weaknesses or can Bangladesh continue to progress and challenge other Test nations on a consistent basis?

How do you see the future for these teams, and the others currently in the lower half of the Test table, with (ever-necessary respect included), rather more pedigree and resources in West Indies and Pakistan?

Sri Lanka took 14 matches to win their first Test and in their first 14 years of Test cricket won seven of 66 matches, but they are now ranked fourth in the world.

Please let us know your thoughts.

There are some quality players in there, Ashraful, Razzak, Mortaza and Shakib look to be of sufficient class to make it at the highest level. But it'll take time for them to blossom as a team, they probably need a few of the guys to get county experience, but that doesn't seem terribly likely.

For a team that recently lost many players to the ICL, its a very good performance. If it weren't for Vettori then Bangladesh would have won reasonably comfortably.

Whether New Zealand are getting worse or Bangladesh getting better, or maybe both, remains to be seen. The next test will tell us more about it

The problem for Bang is that, in 1 innings, it is usually just 1 player who gets a decent score (for them a decent score is over 50), if anyone, so their innings totals are never competative (spelling?). They need to develop as a batting unit, not relying on 1 or 2 guys.

Also, how much does Ross Taylor suck ??? He might have all the talent in the world but he just doesnt have the application, concentration, wotever... he REALLY needs to be dropped from that NZ team.

vash, Taylor is going through a rough patch- I saw him at Old Trafford against England, I asure you, he does have the mental credentials too.

As for the Bangla's, this is just a random result (or even innings), as all that made this contest interesting was NZ's first innings. Bangladesh have some good bowlers, but they need to get some batsmen to give them more to aim for (excluding this game, obviously). I feel even on a road, they would get themselves out for under 350. Anyone remember when Aus came close to losing a test against them, but were saved by a knock form Ponting I believe. This is the same.

They will get there eventually though...

Bangladesh is finding it hard to close the games I guess. Out of 3 ODI they couldve won them all, but they just won 1. If it wasn't for Vettori they wouldve won the test aswell. Same thing happend with Australia, Pakistan , South Africa. They are just unable to finish of the game!!

I agree with Grimvald. Bangladesh never seem to be able to build on good performances. They've given major teams a few scares over the years, but never really kicked on.

I suppose there is no way for them to develop as a test team without playing more tests against decent opposition, but it does seem that at the moment they do not deserve test status.

Taking the test status away isn't going to help bangladesh at all. I don't know about rest other ppl, but I see Banglas are improving. Without 14 Core Player if they play this good, imagine if they had those players!.

Not sure how a Test between two teams that have both lost key players to the IPL tells us about their standing against the rest of the cricketing world.
