My all-time Scarlets XV

Welsh Scarlets
comment on the article

It is difficult to believe that the end of an era at Stradey Park is almost upon us. On Friday night the Scarlets host Bristol in the EDF Energy Cup in a match that will call time on a century and more of tradition, great drama and memorable occasions that have made Stradey famous around the rugby playing world. Naturally therefore it's a time to reminisce, to think back to some of the great days of the past and to engage in some light-hearted debate:

Which was the best ever game? The best try? The most famous victory? The best player . . . and the best team? All will have their different opinions, but to set the ball rolling here goes on my selection of the best ever XV to have worn the Scarlet shirt

The headache begins immediately at full back! Which of the two Terry's - Terry Davies or Terry Price? Both great players, ahead of their time in style. In the end, as it is a Llanelli team, I would go for Terry Davies. On the wing, one of the great all-time favourites at Stradey was Andy Hill, the record try scorer who kicked a vital penalty against the 1972 All Blacks in that 9-3 win.

But because he never attained higher honours, I don't feel he can claim a place in the all time great side. For the same reason other wonderful servants of the Scarlets - Dennis Thomas at scrum half, Roy Thomas at hooker and Clive John, Gareth Jenkins and Hefin Jenkins in the back row are also discounted.

Gerald Davies played a handful of games for Llanelli, but not enough to warrant a place, so my two selections are Ieuan Evans on the right with J J Williams just edging out Ray Williams on the other. At centre, we must include the legendary Albert Jenkins but his partner? If we wre selecting the greatest character, undoubtedly it would be Grav. But in pure rugby-playing ability, there are others ahead: Roy Bergiers, D Ken Jones, Cyril Davies.

But for me, Lewis Jones, perhaps the most gifted rugby player of all has to be in the side. What a partnership - Albert Jenkins and Lewis Jones together in midfield. Where do we start at fly-half? Barry John, Phil Bennett, Carwyn James, Jonathan Davies, Stephen Jones are great players to choose from, but without doubt the selection for Llanelli must be Phil Bennett

He captained Wales and the Lions, but more importantly in this context he was a one-club man and central to its most successful period while captain for six consecutive seasons. And Bennett's partner? Dwayne Peel to represent the modern generation, just ahead of the hugely talented and innovative Onllwyn Brace.

Up front the task is more straight-forward. Barry Llewelyn at loose-head, Norman Gale as hooker, John Warlow just ahead of Brian Butler on the tight. Second row? No debate. It has to be R H Williams and Delme Thomas. In the back-row, the one automatic selection is Ivor Jones at openside flanker. Jones captained Llanelli for eight seasons between 1925 and 1936, but is even more revered in New Zealand than in Tre'r Sosban. A legend in New Zealand has to be in the greatest ever Scarlets team!

For the other two positions, Phil Davies comes very very close, but I have finally gone for father and son - Derek Quinnell at six, with Scott at eight. Both hugely influential and both highly respected British Lions. So here it is - my choice for the greatest ever team to wear the famous Scarlet shirt of Llanelli:

15 Terry Davies
14 Ieuan Evans
13 Lewis Jones
12 Albert Jenkins
11 J J Williams
10 Phil Bennett
9 Dwayne Peel
1 Barry Llewelyn
2 Norman Gale
3 John Warlow
4 R H Williams
5 Delme Thomas
6 Derek Quinnell
7 Ivor Jones
8 Scott Quinnell

. . . A team to take on the world. Let the debate begin!

good idea, but surely the club/region has so much history, its too brief a mention of many, rather the sport , the players ( all) the history and the tradition are more important, these are the things that will build the new era.
No reason that those things are left behind, memories are just that, after all we all have families, but when we move house ? we dont lose our families ?

Am I the only one to have Jonathan Davies in the team. Have you seen the tries he scored in his career ? This is all pig-headedness beacause he went to Rugby League.

I am very Pleased that you have included Albert Jenkins in your list of scarlets greats. He is my Great Grandfather and the whole family are so proud of his skills as a player and the fact that he is still discussed to this day. I went to the last match in the strade and it brought a tear to my eye.

John Davies ? You must be from around Cardigan/Crymych area. He played a lot for them, but he's must be the most over-rated prop in the history of British rugby.
