Dhoni must step up.

Its a flat pitch at Mohali and the team batting first must at least post 400+. Anything less and India would have squandered the advantage of winning the toss.
India are 311/5 at the end of the first day with Ganguly still there. Between Dhoni and Ganguly, the two must take India past 400 batting well with the tail.
Dhoni is captain and must step up to the plate.
If India get past 400, Mishra and Harbhajan will have something to work with.

Last few matches here have been won by the team batting second. The pitch is good for batting and is likely to stay that way for a while
Hussey, Ponting, Hayden could have a field day here so lets not get carried away

More than his runs, I am waiting to see Dhoni's captaincy. The way he setup Ponting in 2nd innings of last match and got him out cheaply was a delight.

I agree

In the old days 400m plus total guaranteed at least against defeat - not so these days

The most I can think India will make is 450 as the loer order cannot pull a rabbit out the hat every time. Much depends on how much cushion Ishanth and Gabguly give by keeping Aus at bay before Dhoni comes in. If India loses Ishanth or Ganguly early Dhoni may not be far behind, he is such an odd starter sometimes in Tests - looking like a cat on a hot tin roof, much akin to Yuvraj that way - both are fine attacking ODI palyers and they seem to know how to blend defense with aggression in the shorter form, they seem a bit confused on how to go about building in Tests and so if Dhoni has a platform to attack he will be much more effective

The first session Day 2 is crucial as Aus have a new ball

This has been a good series so far in the sense the outcomes are not all that predicatable till Day 4

Hopefully India can get another 1 or 2 wickets before the close of play. That will really have the Australians stuttering tomorrow..

India on top here. Australia need another 168 to avoid follow on. It will not be easy to bat on this pitch. amit Mishra has bowled superbly for a debutant.
