Surpassing Lara, the little master is now the leading run scorer in tests.

The shot that fetched him the record was 3 runs of debutant Siddle.

Here's hoping he adds a few 1000 runs more to his kitty.

Congratulations Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

Update: 75 not out and looking good for more.

You've just got to rate Sachin among the greatest ever,a great strokemaker,a wonderful player to watch,a great sportsman. His record speaks for itself, surely along with Lara and Bradman they are the greatest ever, the runs they have each scored proves this.I never saw Bradman but have both Lara and ST and it's been an absolute pleasure and what this great game is all about.I would like though to mention two great batsmen who should but rarely get mentioned among the all time greats, they are both Australian (I'm not by the way) both scored hugely for the team and gave wonderful service as they played here as well. They are Mark Waugh and David Boone, surely they deserve much wider recognition.Sachin, though your among the very best ever,no question about it,thank you.

Tendulkar, Lara, Sobers, Ponting, Rowe and many others from the past, the present and the future are all great batsmen, but there will always be something unique and distinguished about Antiguan great, Sir Vivian Richards. He played strokes so differently and hit the ball with such massive force than anyone else. When the West Indies of years gone by needed runs they always turned to the " Master Blaster" and he always responded like Michael Jordan did for the Chicago Bulls of the N.B.A. in the U.S.A.

Fazeer Mohammed is a fine writer IMO and his article really captures the essence of Lara and Sachin

It is the quality of their play and not the quantity of runs that mattered and I heartilly agree

May Sachin play and entertain as long as he can, I already miss Lara and Gilchrist!

Hey M-P

Did I read somewhere the other day that the senior Indian players have all been told to have a retirement plan in place by the end of the year?

If test matcHes and one day games(all International games) are combined Tendulkar is the best ever btasman after Sir Don.Ponting will never equal Sachin's combined record of over 80 International hundreds. To me Tendulkar has faced graeter pressure than any othr contemporay great and hardly got support rom other batman.Ponting had the advantage of playing for a champion team like Sir Viv Richards.True Sachin was not such a great match-winner ,but remember nor was Brian Lara.Brian may havebeen more talented and had a greater penchant for the big record scores but did not equal Sachin's consistency. In the Arc region or the V region Sanhin is perhaps the best batsman of all.Remembr Sir Don placed him in is all time team.Even Geoff Armstrong has rated SAchin above Brian Lara or Viv Richards.
Ovrall to me if you add first class Cricket SAchin is at no.3,behind Bradman and Sir Jack Hoobs.IOf the criteria is just International Cricket hen SAchin is 2nd.
There can be no doubting that Sir Don was the greatset considering he averaged 999.94 ,scorong 29 centuries in 52 tests Those figures speak for themselves! In any era he would have been the greatest.

Did you just claim Sachin had/has no support!? Dravid is fifth on all-time runs scored isn't he?

Not to mention Laxman and Ganuguly and now Sehwag. (the 'fab four' labelled the greatest middle order ever every day by Indian fans)

Add the docile pitches, numerous games against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh and 19 years to score his runs.

He has had plenty of support.

Hi workdodger

The SEniors indeed have been told to wrap it up - all with the exception of Tendulkar

I see the departures in this order

End of current series 2008 (Aus)
Ganguly and Kumble
End of Eng-Ind series:2008
Dravid or Laxman
End of Ind tour of Pak:2009
Dravid or Laxman
So by the time selectors sitdown to chose Indian squad for NZ tour, four out of 5 would have gone. AS for Tendulkar it really depends on his fitness rather than form, and he may not tour

wombeltilltheend

Ye know so little about history involved here

He HAD no support for a long time. Things changed when Dravid and Ganguly came along - even then he was on his own most of the time.

It is only in the last 5 years or so that there has been more balance in the side

Last five years! Hardly, both Dravid and Ganguly debuts were 12 years ago.

As an attacking batsman, you could ask no better support than Dravid, scored 10,000 runs, gave away no chances.

What a remarkable acheivement for Ganguly, apparently you claim he has scored 7,000 runs in the last five years!

Sachin had the best support out of any of the leading batsman.

Had Lara had the benefits Sachin has had he would have scored 5,000 more.

In 90' Tendulkar had no support other than Azhar and what is all that about docile pitches as slow and low tracks does not always mean that they are flat tracks and that is why players like Crowe, M.Waugh in Lanka, KP in Pak, India, and SL and as an eg. one can include Lara too as he did not had too much success in Pak and India.
