Australia lose injured Jaques

International Tests Australia
comment on the article

Australia opener Phil Jaques is returning home from the tour to India because of a persistent back injury.

news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cri...

It leaves Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich as the only openers in the squad and with Hayden having had injury problems of his own this year, the selectors are now considering potential replacements for Jaques.

Shaun Marsh is one obvious candidate, having made an encouraging start to his one-day career for Australia after starring in the Indian Premier League.

An experienced alternative would be Chris Rogers who, although he failed in his only Test appearance against India in Perth at the start of the year, has enjoyed a successful summer with Derbyshire in English county cricket.

A bolder move would be to call-up 19-year-old Phil Hughes, who recently toured India with the Australia A squad.

But might the selectors spring a surprise, send all-rounder Andrew Symonds to India and ask Shane Watson, who is already on the tour, to provide cover for the opener's role.

Who do you think Australia should choose?

I hope he is ok physically, but it certainly gives Oz a chance to bring up someone who isn't just a FTB

Marsh would be the obvious choice

but knowing the Aussies, they'll send Symonds and possibly ask Hussey to open

No disrespect to Jacques but this isnt a bad thing to happen. He is a limited player at Test level but getting a New South Welshman out of the test reckoning takes an injury or death.
Hopefully now Marsh will be called for & Australia can start planning ahead for the time when Hayden goes.

I'm not so sure they will go for Marsh just yet. I tend to think it will be Andrew Symonds, with Michael Hussey moving up to open. And with Symonds possibly coming back in, Cameron White may very well be replaced with somebody else.

Matthew Hayden
Michael Hussey
Ricky Ponting
Michael Clarke
Davis Hussey
Andrew Symonds
Shane Watson
Brad Haddin
Brett Lee
Mitchell Johnson
Peter Siddle

A front-line bowling trio would consist of Lee, Siddle and Johnson. Back-up would come from Watson, Symonds, Clarke, and David Hussey.

If Stuart Clark comes back from injury, he obviously comes in for Peter Siddle.

This is disastrous for Australia.

I have always feared that the tour to India will weigh down on Australia causing us more injuries, and will effect our future series. The availability of players is shrinking for baggy and the series is not even half way through yet.

Rod Marsh already wrote a long article for Sydney Times front page just the other day, warning the CA to watch out for our extended Cricket commitment and the player fall out.

Lee needs to stick out this tour w/o any injury or else Australia will be in serious trouble against NZ and Saffas.

Was looking at the schedule the other day and it is crazy.
4 Tests in India are followed by 2 against NZ , a split series of 6 against SA & then the 5 Ashes tests ie 17 Test matches from Oct08 to Aug09!
Not forgetting ODI's , a 20/20 World Cup in England & some cash gathering IPL probably for many next April. Oh & some Sheffield Shield to fill in the gaps.
Too much & i doubt any nation has enough good players to stand up to all of that.

Rugby, I can't believe that you - the eternal optimist - could use a phrase like, 'this is disastrous for Australia'.

Seriously though, Australia's first-class cricket is so strong that a lot of your guys can easily make the transition to Test cricket....

I still expect a closely-contested series.
