Points Spy - Madrid Masters *Result*

Masters Series

comment on the article

Following the success of the Points Spy article for the US Open, I welcome you to the second edition of Points Spy!

Introduction
For those who missed Points Spy first time round, the point of this article is to give some insight into how the rankings would change if players exited the tournament at the earliest possible stage. Right now, the presumption is that every player fails to make the 2nd round. Once a player does make the second round, we assume they will not reach the 3rd, and so on. This provides a snapshot of how the rankings would look if the tournament ended at that exact moment in time.

Unofficial Rankings Table
This table focuses on the top 15 players. It shows their points total at the start of the tournament, what they stand to lose, and gain, and how this would affect them if the new rankings were released right now.

Final Result: Andy Murray beats Gilles Simon and claims Madris Masters Title

-----------------

Analysis
Murrays excellent performance this week, and a relatively early exit for Djokovic mean that Murray has closed down a hefty 575pts on the #3 spot.

Simon has made great progress up the leaderboard with a valiant effort to reach the final. He moves up 6 places this week and he will enter the top 10 on Monday. This also magnifies a bad week for Gonzalez who was in the top 10 prior to the tournament and has now slipped 3 places.

Nalbandian has lost a large amount of points after failing to get past the third round. He still maintains the spot above Del Potro who failed in his bid to beat Federer.

Andy is very lonely in that 3000 band of points...reeling djokovic in!

Its all about sustaining this form now. Sure he's still got a lot he can improve on...but as long as progress continues to go the right way, I dont mind how long it takes.

can't wait for Simon's showing at paris. How many points is he defending there? would be great to see him grabbing a MC spot.

So... basically Djokovic is only their respective Aus Open performances ahead of Murray now (give or take a hundred points).

Also a huge gap now back to Ferrer in 5th - can we now say that there is a big 4 in tennis?

In a way yes DrR and of course we are going to have this big points change for 2009.

Also there are some open chances to come - Neither has much from Paris - so possibilities there.

Then theres TMC - again big points with the shift in system. Murrays maiden TMC and Djoko bombed completely last year so both with a clean slate.

Unless Djoko finds some form I can see AM at #3 fairly soon.

Ferrer and Davy seem to be heading south.

True Richie, but don't forget that Murray has 625 points to defend before the AO (St. Pete 250, Paris 125 and Doha 250) whereas Djoko has only 5 points to defend until then

Plus if I understand correctly the transition from old to new ranking points, he effectively will be able to defend only half of the Doha points. Ranking points will double at the end of the year, but Doha will remain a 250 tournament.
