Venus-Zurich Open Champion

Nine years after winning her first Zurich Open title, Venus Williams has repeated the achievement, at the 25th and final European Indoor Tennis Championships to be played at the Hallenstadion, Zurich.

In today's final, Venus dispatched Italy's number one, Flavia Pennetta 76(1) 62.

The five times Wimbledon champion last won the Zurich Open in 1999, beating the then world number one, Martina Hingis, straight.

The first set today went with service with no break points, however the tie-break was a disaster for Flavia, her service collapsing and Venus took it to one.

The first break point of the match came in the third game of the second set.
Venus capitalised and subsequently held her serve for a 3-1 lead.
Service games were held until the seventh game where Venus again broke and served out for her second title of the year.

It was the world number nine's 60th career singles final and her 38th title in an amazing 14 years touring career.

Congratulations to the extraordinary Venus Williams!

I have begun to watch the replay of ivanovic and Williams yesterday. I did see the ending yesterday but I missed the beginning. Two major points I have noticed is that ivanovic's ball toss was going anywhere im surprised she didnt completely miss the serve at one point. The second is that Venus and ana seemed to be rushed on the ball. Is this zurich indoor court one of the fastest?

This is a close first set, on serve so far....

Looks like a tiebreak looms.

Conosu - it really is refreshing to see you give credit where it is due.

Much more balanced approach if I might say so ok

Cheers Duggietoo.

You of course know Maria Sharapova (my favourite female player) is not in action until 2009.

Hopefully, when Masha returns, so will my enthusiasm to restore 'balance' in my submissions where it rightfully belongs!
cheers

Nothing wrong with favourites - but a true fan can always recognise the achievements of others.

I too want to see Sharapova back, because on what I am seeing there is actually little real competition for JJ.

Frankly I have big doubts about Ivanovic and the Williams do tend to have injury problems.

Couple of bright stars on the horizon but I do like the determination of MS and her tenacity.

Good win considering the last 3 matches..... Venus is doing pretty well for someone who was classed by many people as totally finished 2 or 3 years ago.........

Expect her to pick up another GS next year and probably a couple more titles too.

Well done Venus, I watched the match online before I saw Hull city. She showed she does have some consistency because pennetta was doing really well and in my opinion Venus took a lot off her shots to keep balls in play. Today the tides turned and pennetta undid her work. Aswell how often do you see a game of aces on the WTA.

I hope radwanska doesnt go on a win streak and take linz and quebec titles. Although I dont think she entered quebec

Congratulations Venus. About *time* you got another title to go with that Wimbledon...

Nine years down the track and it looks like you are going to be the last champion of this 25-year old event, which makes the win that little bit more special.

Well done.
