A dissapointing end to an excellend Welsh U21 campaign saw the young dragons play impressive and confident football last night at Villa Park. Unlimately England took their chances at
Ninian Park but last night Wales showed that they can dominate for large periods and a soft free kick and an own goal was the difference.

As a nation Wales will take great confidence from the campaign and at last we have a squad of quality players who will soon be looking at long careers on the senior international scene.

The Welsh youngsters had played just 4 Premier League games between them - compared to 692 by England's men, so given time and the opportunity to play at a higher club level the future is bright..... the future is red.

This Evening (1945) Wales take on England in the Uefa European U21 Championship qualifying play-off 2nd leg at Villa Park.
I'm going to continue with this article for the return leg on Tuesday where Wales will face England in the U21's Euro Championships. The home side are currently 3-2 up on aggregate after extending their unbeaten run in 90 mins to 26 games in Cardiff last Friday

However, U21's Welsh manager Brian Flynn has a fit squad of players to choose from and says he has "One or Two surprises" up his sleeve. So obviously Ronaldo has found out he has a Welsh great grand mother and there will be a Welsh ref and 2 Scottish lines men. Brian Flynn loses defender Lewin Nyatanga to the senior squad, but has the extra firepower of Sam Vokes up front after the striker was released by John Toshack. Wales and Stockport County goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams said "We gave a top quality side like England a real good game and that is something we can built on."

England U21’s manager Stuart Pearce has warned his players that there is still work to do in order to qualify for the Under-21 European Championship in Sweden. England had to come from behind last Friday to beat Wales and Pearce said "… to win the game against a very, very good side makes me pleased." Scorer of the 3rd goal Gabriel was Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor and he also had a note of caution for England, he said "Wales have proven they are a very good side".

I was listening to some of the first game on the radio on 5 live, at one point a commentator said (Rough figures) England played a starting 11 that had accumulated over 800 premiership caps whilst Wales boasted just 4, so obviously with playing away from home, with being 1 goal down against some very experienced youngsters Wales will have a mammoth task ahead. I remain quietly confident that we can pull this back, it won’t be easy to get the upper hand but if we can repeat last Friday’s start and go 1 up early on then the game is wide open once again.

Tomorrow Evening (1945) Wales take on England in the Uefa European U21 Championship qualifying play-off 1st leg with the return expected to be on 14 October.England finished top of their group and Wales earned a play-off spot by beating Romania 3-0 last month.

Brian Flynn's Wales side looked impressive against the Romanians and will relish the chance of putting one over England. England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce led his team to the semi-finals last year, when they lost in a penalty shoot-out against Holland.

The teams last met in May this year at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham for a friendly and it was the visitors who won by 2-0 with first half goals from Tom Huddlestone and Theo Walcott. Brian Flynn's team had been unbeaten in four games and started the match with six players capped at senior level. England can expect to face a much changed side tomorrow with so many U21's playing for the senior team on Saturday. England, who started with five members of their senior squad, remain undefeated in 10 games at U21 level this season.

England have to be favourites to win this game, however Wales have got a small but decent squad to call upon. Whilst England draw their squad from the Premiership and Championship, Wales scout the 4 main divisions and Wrexham, however I can see Wales pinching this one by a single goal on the night but just failing over 2 legs.......

Uefa European Under-21 Championship play-off draw:

Germany v France
Denmark v Serbia
Turkey v Belarus
Austria v Finland
Wales v England
Italy v Israel
Switzerland v Spain

Collison should walk into the England U21 side.

The England U19 coach came and watched Collison captain and score in a reserve match for West Ham last season and then decided to choose Anthony Grant from Chelsea instead doh, so Collison went to Wales after Bellamy and Gabbidon recommended him as the next Steven Gerrard/Michael Carrick hybrid.

Oh well, England's loss. He'll have England fans crying for years, wishing they had picked him earlier. Just like Giggs! laugh Joke.

Giggs was never eligible to play for England

Hence the joke comment...

Only Sierra Leone and Wales I believe.

But seriously, Collison is better at 20 than Giggs was at the same age.

EaStMiDz and Roakey

I was referring to a full England cap, not the U21's. Collison will most probaly play in Wales next game, he wouldn't come into Capello's thoughts for a full England cap, and most probably never would.
Players such as Fletcher have had the opportunity to play at the highest level against some of the best teams, if he had stuck out for an England cap, well he can't even get a game for Palace.

I am quite excited that Flynn and Toshack are looking into players who have Welsh ancestory and are not FULLY Welsh.

We have a really small catchment area in Wales and to be honest we need to expose any loophole we can if they can benefit the National team.

As long as they have the quality we require and the passion for the team, I couldn't care less where they were born.

Don't under-estimate Collison just because you have Ramsey too.

Collison, long term, will bring more to Welsh side than Ramsey.

Collison won't go missing for 45 minutes like Ramsey will.

Its common knowledge that Ramsey is head and shoulders above Collison in terms of ability.

Collison is a good player, no doubt, but you are only slating Ramsey because he plays for Arsenal and you are a Hammers fan (coincidentally Collison is an Iron).

The reason that Ramsey wasn't as effective in the second half was due to his influence being nullified by the introduction of Muamba and the fact that all the English players were wary of the threat he posed.

P.S. This is not a slight on Collison, he will be a top player and I for one am happy he chose to pledge his alliegence to Wales. I truly think that Ramsey is the next big thing in the footballing world, a cut above all the rest.

Collison the next Xavi?!?! What planet are you on?

Ramsey = Welsh Fabregas.

This is my last response to you as you are clearly here on a wind-up.

I tried to be objective in my previous post, but youre just being silly now.
