Can Scots get a taste for Heineken Cup?

European Glasgow
comment on the article

The Heineken Cup gets underway this weekend, with the final taking place at Murrayfield next May.
The chances of a Scottish side going all the way are remote to say the least but can Edinburgh and Glasgow present a challenge in the opening pool stage?
Edinburgh are up against Leinster, Wasps and Castres, while Glasgow face Toulouse, Bath and the Dragons.

Forgive my eternal optimism Venachar01. Admittedly we’ve had a bit of a rocky start. But I still think there’s enough class in the Edinburgh squad to do some serious damage to these guys. Both Leinster and Wasps will come to Murrayfield knowing they’ve been beaten there. Don’t underestimate the power of defeated psychology… Looking forward to Saturday!

Doubt it to be honest. Glasgow lost to Connacht already this season & Edinburgh are second from bottom & below Connacht in the Magners League table.

I was at Glasgow against Munster last week & Munster beat them without getting out of 2nd gear really (no disrespect).

For me Edinburgh are the better of the 2 sides & if they had all their players I think they could have had a chance but withouth them I am not sure to be honest.

I think 3 wins each would be seen as some sort of success from the groups this year.

As bottom seeds its going to get harder and harder to make any impression.

Do sides get more Euro Seeding points for finishing 3rd as opposed to 4th. Or do points get handed out only if you make the last 8?

RugbyRJ3,

To be honest I think the way Glasgow played meant we couldn't get out of 2nd gear.

If they had got a kinder group maybe, but Toulouse will rout them!

Glasgow have no consistency - not a bad side certainly better than the Dragons and maybe capable of claiming a scalp on Bath or Toulouse but it ends then.

Good backrow - Brown, Beattie, Barclay, good kickers Parks, Gregor strong front row but its a weak backline. They play a limited game but if it clicks on the day it works - nearly beat ospreys, certainly annoyed munster, did a number on scarlets and there top 3 sides in magners. However if there game plan goes wrong u get the kind of results we saw against Connacht. Could really end up anywhere this year. 2 points off 3rd place, 4 points of bottom. All in all good start

There you are Ven, last offer! Back up your tastless and hurtful and wrong acusation re me, beer and murrayfield and I will send you £1000. If you can't 'get your facts right' (your words Ven) then withdraw your libel.

Please a soctish side doing well in hc!
Claiming a pre-season friendly actually counts. It is one thing the welsh believing the EDF is the same as the HC, and it ain't, but really and meaningles pre-season warm up.
Scotish teams have less chance than welsh sides of winning the HC. The welsh have about a 2% chance max! and they are 154 times more likely to win that the scots.

Come on Ven!!

"Can Scots get a taste for Heineken Cup?"

In a word, no.

Already done that elsewhere BarryBenn. If your lot (better players in the team at that) keep punching each other we'll certainly sort your team at Murrayfield and Adams Park, running track or no running track.
Wasps were woefull in pre season and I've not seen anything else so far to indicate that they have improved. I won't even mention uncontested scrums!

Glasgow might but Edinburgh have a real lack of depth, maybe this reflects Scottish rugby as a whole.

Maybe try and get back a few of our top players to shore up the team - like Jason White and Euan Murray. Where are the next generation of backs - are we doing this badly?
