Scotland prepare for Norway test

World Cup Scotland
comment on the article

Scotland need three points when they face Norway in Saturday's crucial World Cup qualifier at Hampden.

But manager George Burley is already facing a selection headache after three players withdrew from his squad.

Rangers striker Kenny Miller and midfield team-mate Kevin Thomson are out with a hamstring strain and ankle injury, respectively.

And Derby County winger Kris Commons, who started last month's victory over Iceland, is also out with a hamstring strain.

Burley will have to name a new skipper for the Hampden clash, with Barry Ferguson injured and Stephen McManus suspended.

Rangers veteran David Weir is the obvious choice to replace McManus and partner Gary Caldwell at the heart of the Scotland defence.

Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo and Bristol City left-back Jamie McAllister are surprise inclusions in Burley's squad and the Scotland manager must be impressed with the continuing good form of Rangers full-back Kirk Broadfoot.

But how should the Scots line-up on Saturday?

Should Kris Boyd and James McFadden spearhead the attack against the Norwegians?

Or should Steven Fletcher, Chris Iwelumo and David Clarkson come into Burley's reckoning?

With Scotland currently sitting third in Group 9 with three points from two games, Burley knows the importance of victory in keeping alive his side's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Should he opt for a 4-5-1 formation, which can change on the attack to 4-3-3?

What do you think?

i wouldnt pick any rangers players because their attitude to the national team is terrible, every time an international comes up and there is a flurry of call offs its always rangers players, barry ferguson never wants to play friendlies or smaller teams and the others follow his example. kevin thompson should be seizing every opportunity he can instead of crying off every time he is picked. i'd go for the players from hibs, hearts dundee united who would love to play for scotland instead of treating it like an inconvenience, get rid of ferguson, miller, weir thompson and mcgregor and maybe we'd bring a bit of stability to the side instead of having a team for friendlies and a team for big games

Cannot believe some of the negative comments regarding Fletcher

I am a die hard Scot and United fan, and I obviously have a soft spot for him. However, u cannot doubt that himself, Ferguson, Gordon, Hutton and McFadden are the difference in our team.

Bear in mind Fergie is the most acclaimed manager of modern times and he often plays Fletcher in the big games. There is a reason for that. He works his 4$$ off for the team and has never shunned playing for Scotland.

I don't think he's had the best of starts internationally, but it must take some adjusting from playing with Ronaldo & Rooney to Broadfoot and Alexander. I think the only thing he is guilty of is trying too much. He tries to split defences with his passing, when at times the simpler option would work. You can't really critise this. He setup McFadden with a 40 yard pass for the last goal against Iceland.

It's no surprise that our fortunes have turned since these players have come to the fore, and Fletcher is definetely in that group, if not one of the best.

Can you please cast your mind back to the Georgia game, yes, he was very poor. However, he had just recovered from a broken leg sustained against France. McLeish even said it was a mistake, but the lad wanted to play.

I'm sorry, but in this day in football, you cannot critise that kind of commitment. Deservedly captain.

I'll be at the game, it'll be a tough one... but I think we'll do it.

2-0 Scotland, Mcfadden and Fletcher the scorers.

Harrierjohn - shame on you..............
How dare you question the integrity of any player regardless of who they play for.
You may have a point yes there may be more call offs from the old firm clubs but to specifically aim your vents at one club is unacceptable.
Isn't Kenny Miller the top scorer for Scotland?
Does Davie Weir not have the most caps?
Arn't we a better team with B Ferguson in?
Also funny how you don't mention Broadfoot - or is he ok.

Any Scottish player in my humble opinion would give there teeth (Joe Jordan exception) to play for their country Rangers players are no different.

Your point however regarding other players is good we do have a lot of good players in the SPL who hopefully will evolve into the international set-up,I'm sure they will not be overlooked the manager seems to be picking form players.

Scotland Forever..............

Moderators - constantly deleting posts for no apparent reason ..... obviously you've not read what some people have been saying. My last post had nothing remotely offensive.

You're simply spoiling what was becoming a fun conversation. There was no major malice, and it was intelligently written. Maybe you should check out the word "sarcasm" in the dictionary.
