Liverpool have confirmed defender Martin Skrtel damaged his posterior cruciate ligament against Manchester City.

The amount of time the Slovakia international is facing on the treatment table remains unknown, although it is unlikely he will be available to manager Rafa Benitez anytime soon.

The Reds centre-back is now due to visit a knee specialist where the exact timeframe required for his recovery will be discovered.

"Martin underwent a scan this morning (Monday) which showed damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," said club spokesman Ian Cotton told the club's official website.

Timescales
"He will see a specialist tomorrow to assess the extent of the injury and will then have an accurate idea of the timescales involved before he is back playing again."

Earlier on Monday, Skrtel revealed his injury left him in the worst pain he has ever experienced.

The Slovakia international was stretched off late on at the City of Manchester Stadium on Sunday after falling awkwardly while shielding the ball from Ched Evans.

Skrtel's agony was obvious as he was given oxygen on the pitch and he has now informed Slovakia's team doctor that he went through a new level of pain after twisting his knee.

New level
"I have already spoken with Martin and he told me he had never experienced such pain before," Peter Malinovsky told SITA.

"Martin will have an MRI scan on Monday and I don't really want to think about how long he might be on the sidelines.

"It might only be a week, but it could be a lot longer and I don't want to believe what the consequences of this injury could really be."

Very good news indeed. One thing that has quite surprised me since last posting in this topic a couple of days ago is that Skrtel and Agger are both only 23. The future's bright for our defence and these 2 must be signed up on long term deals i.e. until they retire asap. smiley

Brilliant news. The sooner we can get the Skrtel-Agger partnership going, the better

Tell you something else. I think it will be time soon for Carragher to call it a day. Maybe two more seasons from now. He has interests off the field to crack on with, and I think he is feeling the pressures of keeping up with football.

Has anyone noticed the parallels here? Last season, just when our season was beginning to pick up consistency, Agger got injured. From then on we started drawing games we could easily have won and we started conceding silly goals. Rafa had to sign Skrtel who after a wobbly first two games steadied the ship. Luckily this time we have a hungry and able replacement, Agger himself. The irony of it all is, this opportunity for Agger comes just as ramblings of discontent from the Agger camp started surfacing last week, even Real linked with a January bid! So Agger, show us what you got!

LiverBirdMate, Carra offers something the two young pretenders still have years to learn. The experience of 'been there done that' comes from years of being in same or similar situations and dealing with them effectively. Knowing how Christiano is likely to react when challenged, knowing how Drogba is likely to handle a lobbed pass etc. Have you ever asked yourself how come Carra is always the last man to tackle or on the line even when Reina blunders? Carra is not done by a long shot, but it is encouraging to see two very able apprentices and Sammy Hyypia on the bench...

I can see Carra playing till he's 34/35 maybe more. He has so much experience to give to the team and especially Agger & Skrtel. However, I would like to see the Agger/Skrtel partnership sooner rather than later with Carra possibly moving to RB.

before the season started i actually thought Agger may be used as left back. that way we get all of them in the defence. that said, we look pretty good defensively and Dossena and Aurleio are doing ok down the left too.
no question Agger will go back into that defense and do well and hopefully he will get some minutes on the pitch for Denmark to get some match fitness.
he was in the defense for 2 seasons before Skrtel came and Reina won the golden glove in those 2 years. i still think Hyppia an do a job too and gives our defense experience.

Yer I think it would be a bad idea to replace Dossena for Agger at LB. He does have the pace to be an attacking full back but in my opinion he's much better in the middle as he can read a game well and is a solid tackler. It's pretty obvious that Dossena has lacked confidence since he joined but he's showed signs of improvement so I think we should stick with him. He cost us 6 mil so Rafa must of seen something in him.

I think anyone suggestion even Agger himself he could replace Carra is an absolute joke, there isn't one defender at Liverpool that is better than Carra.

And as for the City fans that couldn't believe he wasn't given a red card for karate, well hes good at hiding like Vidic.

No way can you say he deversed this uncontrollable injury, ok its a bad tackle but does ronaldo not get told of for diving when he got that absoluelty diabolical penalty last week?

lfc4cl ... to be honest. if u watch the penalty decision again, yeah, it was never a penalty. but i can guarantee if you were up against jlloyds tackle, you also wouldnt be able to keep your feet! ronaldo didnt protest either, which makes a change!

and vidic.. hiding!?
if thats the case he made a really really bad job of it when he chopped robbie keane down twice in 10mins against you!

dont get me wrong, im probably the only manc in the world that likes liverpool and the way they play, their grit and determination.
and im happy for skrtel to be back in action so soon.

but pls dont use united as all of your examples! (minus the one drogba one)smiley
