Get things into proportion

Premier League Manchester City

comment on the article

I've just seen three games at Eastlands that rank up there with the very best in the 38 years since I first started watch the Blues - and two of them were defeats!

I admit I'd rather have seen City win in the games against Chelsea and Liverpool, but the football on show in those games and the victory against Portsmouth was top class.

I'm lucky that I don't have to pay to watch most of the games I attend these days, but I did for many years and I'm well aware that some of the tickets are expensive. Seeing your team win is usually the priority, but wouldn't you rather see City going for it and failing heroically than being frightened and just trying to stop the opposition from playing?

City is a "work in progress", but a club everyone wants to beat, at the moment, because of their new-found status as the richest club in the world. If you saw the game at Wigan you'll know what I mean. Both Chelsea and Liverpool had to be at their best to beat City, who in both games, particularly in the first half against Liverpool, showed some skilful entertaining football.

The dismissal of Pablo Zabaleta made a huge difference to the game. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been shown the red card, but Liverpool are too good to play against with only 10 men.

Perhaps that's where I'd disagree with what happened next. I don't think I'd have brought on Gelson Fernandez and played him at right-back. In an emergency like that I might have played the tiring Shaun Wright-Phillips in defence. He's a tenacious tackler and I'm sure he would have been effective as a short-term solution - or how about Tal Ben Haim in central defence and Micah Richards to right back.

Mark Hughes went for a more positive solution, leaving SWP still available for counter-attacks. Having praised City's attacking philosophy, I can't criticise him for that. Once the January transfer window opens I'm sure some of the weaknesses in the squad will be dealt with. For now thanks for the entertainment, even in defeat.

Off the field I was delighted to see the Executive Chairman Garry Cook looking after Colin Bell, Tony Book and Mike Summerbee during the Liverpool game. I saw him chatting to them during the game. In his programme notes he talked about about the determination of the new owners to maintain City's links with the community, which it's always been famous for. They continue to say all the right things.

If you're a City fan, don't be down in the dumps, after the defeat by Liverpool; though I can't deny I was disappointed to lose after being 2-0 up. Look at the bigger picture. City are trying to play the game properly, and are going in the right direction, very quickly.

I agree with most of the previous comments but they are now outdated.
Robinho has proved that his class will tell. But is Hughes the right man for an ambitious club? I fear that his tactics and choice of players is poor, for instance playing Vassels instead of Elano. He speaks too much in public and undermines his players. He was excellent with dray horses at Blackburn, not so good handling City thoroughbreds. Remember that he has at his disposal the Sven team plus - Zabaleta, Kompact, Ben Haym, Wright Phillips and Robhino. Come back Sven or another international heavyweight manager. Please?
We luv you City-- We do.

Did you make all those spelling mistakes on purpose or are you just thick?

Come on Cheesie. You only do a couple of games a week at most! You must have time to write a new article. We've beaten Arsenal 3-0 since then - that must rank as one of the better games!

what Mark Hughes should do is concentrate on defence because if they can't score we never loose then build a team around your defence
