Aldridge fears for Liverpool's future

Premier League Liverpool
comment on the article

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has hit out the club's owners and says he fears for the future of the club.

Liverpool take on Manchester City this weekend, and Aldridge believes their new-found wealth could compromise Liverpool's established position in the top four of the Premier League.

"All of a sudden they (Manchester City) have got this sugar daddy who is going to make them into a force," he said.

"We've hung on to third or fourth spot in the last few years, and done well in Europe, but that's a must now because Man City are going to come into the fold.

"If we get pushed out of that top four, all of a sudden the stadium problems escalate and the board problems escalate.

"We could be in a bit of the mess. We're in a bit of a mess at the moment, on the pitch we're OK, but you can see it getting worse."

Do you agree with Aldridge's comments? What is the best way forward for Liverpool?

I would also like to get your thoughts on a potential takeover of the club by the supporters.

Aldridge is on the board of Share Liverpool FC - a group who are looking for 100,000 fans to stump up £5,000 each so they can launch a takeover.

He believes the idea is not as far-fetched as it may seem and that they would be willing to go in with any potential new owners so the fans at least have a voice on the board.

Is it possible? If so, would Liverpool will be able to compete with the likes of Man City, Chelsea and Manchester United in the transfer market?

yes, yanks are not the right owners. not enough money.

NO, this has not impacted life on the pitch. benitez has been given a lot of money inspite of yanks not having enough.

top 2 clubs would not spare a second on alonso, kuyt, benayoun, pennant etc. why have we not sold them and bought top class?

benitez is the reason, not the owners.

Chelsea fan in peace

This guy is only interested in the publicity this news will get him.He obviously would benefit more with this fan ownership idea.

who doesnt know about all these problems? You dont solve these issues on the pages of newspapers and like Red_Sam_ThisYearHonest! (U13367423)
said, the credit meltdown is affecting everybody(i'm sure even Roman Abramovich).

Aldridge is just doing Chelsea,Manu etc a great favour by trying to raise dust over what we all know and unsettling the team.Maybe i should be grateful to him for this.

He surely cant be a friend of LFC if he keeps at this.

John Alridge did alot for the club as a player BUT we don't need him now. We don't need negagtive comments like this that hold little or no concern. I live in the USA and every day on the news we are bombarded with this money crisis and debt. The new owners are rightfully concerned and cautious.

Why follow all the other clubs and get a new stadium anyway? Liverpool should stay put, do their own thing, eventually we'll be the only club who's still playing in the oldest ground. Unique? yes we are. No other club is like Liverpool - including its ground. Keep Anfield!

Alridge mentions the last 12 months of putting LFC issues in public and then he does this!!! He needs to listen to himself and shut up.

Good Luck lads for tomorrow!!!

The problem with all this Share LFC stuff is the calibre of people taking it forwards. I registered my interest because I wanted to know more, but since then they have brought clowns like aldridge on board. He is completely ignoring the global economic situation, and talks about how liverpool are doing okay at the moment, and how they have had some recent success in europe. The joker also talks about clinging on to 3rd or 4th at a time when the coaching and playing staff clearly have the capability to be pushing for 1st or a close 2nd. As much as hicks and gilette fail to respect the history of the club, the Moore's finances would not have stretched to Torres, Mascherano and Keane so we should respect that. Barry was clearly overvalued and Rierra adds Barry's balance but more width at half the price - we should respect that too. As for doing business behind closed doors, he criticises the owners for their public debates and then participates in a pathetic interview like this - sniping to maintain the momentum of all of those media lead half-wit stories of the past couple of years instead of looking forwards.
You are a joke aldridge.

As much as I would like to see G&H sell to stabilise LFC financially, the finger is pointing at the wrong two people. The only two people responsible for this mess are Moores and Parry (Parry probably more so) whose only concern over the sale was to feather their own nest. With DIC in charge Moores wouldn't have his place on the board and Parry would have been sacked a year ago. OK so the yanks haven't done everything they said, but if Moores had forked out for the signings of Torres, Mascherano and Keane people would be thanking him. Most of the issues between Rafa and the owners is down to Parry as well, they just don't get on, but Parry has the ear of Gilette so there you go. I firmly believe with the economic downturn in the US that Sheikh Mo will own the club by the end of Jan 09, with the personal fortune to ride out the economic downturn.
Although fan ownership sounds good, it only worked for Barca because they did it at a time where the cash could be invested to grow and had the right people in charge. All of LFC fans cash will go to buying the club, then what. We will have to rely on revenue to run it, and that would cost the club more than the £50mil that G&H have taken out. I do think though that those wanting the yanks out will listen to anyone and Aldo has capitilised on this. He is a fan, why shouldn't he have his opinion, but you are soft if you think that he didn't have alterior motives, and if he really cares it is G&H he should be lobbying, not the press or fans who already agree.

agree with aldridge. it's disgraceful that a club like Liverpool have waited this long for a new stadium. OK Anfield has it's history, but times require a larger stadium.

Everyone remembers the Wembley saga, but nobody is complaining now.

empty promises are all we get from the LFC board.

True Liverpool fans know that Aldo is a legend, cares for our club deeply, is all about Liverpool, is a regular on our station, commentates like mad on the local radio and is 100% Liverpool.

Totally agree with what he says. However, it's an old view and does not merit the publicity given by the BBC. In any case, let's get behind the team and make sure the Yanks know that we think they either step up or step down.

The article states that Hicks had spoken to Klinsmann - not correct.

Parry and Gillet arranged the meeting then informed Hicks. Hicks may have told the press about it.

There are two clear camps in this same -
Parry & Gillet VS Rafa & Hicks.

Hicks is the only one of the 3 that sees eye to eye with Rafa.
