Sol Campbell

Premier League Portsmouth
comment on the article

The Spurs ‘fans’ should be ashamed of themselves for their total lack of originality and ignorance. Not only for supporting Spurs, but for the vile abuse dished out at Sol Campbell at the weekend. Intelligence isn’t a trait most associated with Spurs and their fickle-beyond-belief supporters, but surely even they could have common decency.

You have managed to lose the respect of several Spurs fans by your comments baseyboy. I can quite understand why you haven't completed your profile.

BluebeforeAbramowich (U13464692) - you're like a tabloid journalist, you took what I said and paraphrased it to mean something completely different!

I guess where we disagree is that you're persisting with the idea that the songs were racist. In my opinion they are not.

I also we think we have different levels of tolerance as to what is and isn't offensive. Personally, swearing and the crude/crass nature of the songs aimed at Sol don't bother me, racism would, out and out homophibia would.

My point was that for me and I think many others, the dark humour and wit that is contained within many football chants (some maybe equally offensive to you) are part and parcel of the game and unique to British football. And without the intensity of the rivalries and crowd banter English football would be much less interesting to much of the massive global audience it has. Which has nothing to do with a bunch of racists.

Also I'd like to point out that going back to these songs aimed at Sol, whilst I don't think they're racist, I also don't think they're either clever or funny and I'd rather some wittier alternatives were dreamed up by someone so I could join in!

Also, from memory, about 90% of those who were 'blue before abramovich' were members of the national front weren't they? (sorry, cheap shot, but not completely inaccurate!)

For all the Spurs fans in denial it seems that the Tottenham hierarchy disagree. They are planning to give those responsible lifetime bans.

I have been a Spurs season ticket holder for ten years. I have followed my club home and away, accompanied by my step brother who is half Indian. During all of this time, I have not once experienced any racist behaviour from Spurs fans. However, on numerous occasions my brother has been subjected to racist comments from away fans, particularly Everton fans. Similarly, both West Ham and Everton fans regularly direct Nazi salutes at Spurs fans. I am proud to support a club whose fan base is so racially and religiously diverse, bucking the general trend in football. Those who assert that the chanting directed at Sol Campbell was racist have their own axe to grind and are reading into the chanting a meaning which simply does not exist. These are the same people who claim that the rallying cry of 'Yi* Army' is racist whilst patently ignoring the venemous way the same chant is used by opposing fans, such as Chelsea. A number of the chants about Sol Campbell are homophobic and whilst I find this abhorrent it is a separate issue. Negative chants about black players can be offensive without necessarily being racist.

sorry but can anyone explain how is the 'humpty dumpty' song racist and was that only one and what was the homophobic ones like? but also if the spurs fans were being racist towards Sol would they not also be racist againt there own players like King, Zokora, Bent & every other coloured player on the pitch.

that the end of the day if Bent said someting racist to King, does that make Bent a racist??? & if other coloured people where stand with King does that mean he was being racist to everyone or just King???

i think when fan the shoutin racist comment there not always truely racist, there just try to put the player of there game.

Sorry PompeyWallasey, my bad. I hope you can read/understand it now. If not let me know and I'll try to fix/simplify it for you.

But I’m not saying its right, but it’s just that some people use it and its ok and then other people use it and it's not ok.

Sol Campbell wasn't just some random black play they choose to pick-on.

"It goes on everywhere and should be stopped. However this is hardly the worst example.

Look at Croatia and their persistant racist abuse of players for a start."

Oh well that's ok then - as long as we can make it ok by passing the buck every time we will never have to do anything.
