Cipriani to start

Wasps

Danny Cipriani is to start on Saturday - 4 months after his horror injury and 6 weeks ahead of schedule.

I think he should be fine. He will have been in full contact training for at least a couple of weeks and he has arguably the best medical team in Rugby Union around him.

Question is - will he be as good as before the injury?

This is ridiculous, who has a better idea on whether cipriani is ready to come back, a rugby medical staff, who will have years of medical experince, or some posters on a rugby forum. TOUGH CHOICE!

He may (must) be medically fine, but will his form be better than the alternative?

It seems a bold move for him to start. Medical opinion regardless, I'd have given him a game in the reserves, or off the bench first.

<<Suprised he has gone straight back in at starting 10, I thought he may have been given the odd 15-20 mins from the bench first.>>

In a way, putting him on the bench would be more risky. What do you do if Walder/Staunton get injured early on? And wouldn't you rather see how his form is during the 1st 20 minutes than the last if its a close game.

<<He may (must) be medically fine, but will his form be better than the alternative?>>

His form isn't going to get any better without him playing, and it wouldn't be any better in 6 weeks either. He's got to start playing again sometime, and when he does his form is most likely going to be poor.

england selectors needed

I thought this was a forum, if this is not a place for people to express their opinions then what is it for?

Obviously the Wasps medical team know more than us but If I wanted to just read about their opinions I would visit the Wasps website, not 606.

Wilkinson has been injured and will have a spell on the sidelines.

THIS IS A CLEAR INDICATION OF WHAT COULD HAPPEN TO CIPRIANI.

Wilkinson himself was rushed back into playing rugby after his injuries and now he is suffering from injury after injury.

Bringing Cipriani will just have a similar problem with Johnny and i dont want that to happen to England's next number 10 wonderkid. Lets not ruin this young lad's chances to do great things. Please do not play him! It would be a repeated mistake. Let Cipriani heel fully, you cannot rush nature to heal itself, please let Danny heal and not be another injured Johnny!

I agree with the general trend here - give the kid more time off. In general, Rugby has a big problem which is bringing back players early. JW is the poster child for recurring injuries. And, no doubt, part of his problem has been the need by English Rugby to have their top stars playing. But there are plenty of other examples. Very bad idea for Danny - or anyone else - to join this club. Feels bad to say it, but I know we will all be watching in hopes another injury does not happen.

On the other hand, I agree with Mickyphil1 about Cipriani's CV to date. All the potential, but he needs to play club rugby and really grow into the 10 role before England. But that is after more recovery.

I find it funny that everyone here is comparing cipriani to Wilkinson predicting more injuries and so on.

why?

Wilkinsons had a run of bad luck with injuries, but not form coming back too early - the only time he's ever come back early has been the lions to NZ in 2005.

everything else has come from general long term wear and tear and incidents like this, you can't protect anyone from twisting their knee or breaking a leg etc... it's just an occupational hazard of this sport.

You really can't wrap him up in cotton wool and hope he never gets hurt again, the only way anyone is going to know if he's truly ready to play is when he plays and we see his form.

But, I'd imagine the Wasps medical team having 24/7 access to the guy and his recovery program know better then anyone on the internet whether he's physically fit enough to play again or not, him breaking down is on their heads, so I doubt they or Edwards or Geech will risk losing a player of Cipriani's quality for the whole season by bringing him back early when they could wait two three weeks and have him for the rest of the campaign unless they were all 100% sure he was fit enough to play and there were no other problems.

Everything else is just subjective.

Exactly, goodnumber10, posters who are saying the reason why Wilkinson has problems with injuries is because he has been rushed back from previous injuries - do you actually have proof or are you just using it as a convenient excuse for him being so injury prone?

If you look at his previous injuries; only one (Knee Ligament Damage in 2005) could possibly be attributed to being rushed back. Other than that his injuries have never been repeated injury:

Dec '03 - Shoulder
Oct '04 - Bicep
Jan '05 - Knee
Mar '05 - Knee
Jul '05 - Shoulder
Sep '05 - Appendix
Nov '05 - Groin
Jan '06 - Adductor
Sep '06 - Knee
Nov '06 - Kidney
Sep '07 - Ankle
May '08 - Shoulder
Oct '08 - Knee

Sure; he has had the same injuries more than once, but often these have been years apart - the fact is that Jonny is just injury-prone. You could give him a year off after each injury and this would still be the case. It is nothing to do with him being rushed back to action.

Cipriani hasn't started the game yet, and its not just for rushing injured players back that clubs have a repuation.
They also have a reputation for putting bums on seats by naming star players in the media and then withdrawing them late on.
Not saying Wasps are necessarily playing that game, but a few extra 1000 people at Adams Park tonight won't hurt the club's bank balance will it?
I suspect he'll only make a short appearance, if at all.
If not, and he plays a major part of the game, it will indeed have been a miracle recovery, as McGeechan says.
