Live - Sunday's Premier League

Premier League
comment on the article

Don't you just love the Premier League? The drama, the excitement, the shocking refereeing decisions - it never fails to entertain, amuse and downright infuriate the masses.

Saturday was everything the world's most celebrated league should be. Tim Cahill's red card, Cristiano Ronaldo's "penalty", Andrew Johnson's horrible tackle, Geovanni's bolt from the blue. I mean, how many talking points do you need?

Today sees Portsmouth (are they the new potential crisis club? More of that later) host rock-bottom, winless, dispirited Spurs, while Wigan take on the dancing Brazilians of Manchester City.

But who will be swinging to the samba beat, and who will be feeling the heat come this evening? It's 0-0, we go again.

Steve Bennett should be ashamed for his dispplay, and as for Zaki, you "pundits" are encouraging players to cheat by saying he played well. Never seen a player dive and con his way to so much without being pulled to the side for a warning

I have to say, and yes Im a city fan, The treatment the ref gave city was disgusting. Zaki dived across every blade of the pitch and got free kicks, the penalty decision was the biggest joke since Rio Ferdinand cost 30mil. Not to mention the clear cut consistant fouling from Wigan and the clear penalty we should have had. I can generally stomach defeat but the ref and his assistants should never work again. Pathetic.

............................

Do you mean the biggest joke since Rob styles became a pro eferee?

Frankly, I'm disgusted by Bennett too; we all talk about the dreadful referees when we want to discuss football - surely the game is the thing. These guys are simply inept rather than corrupt but they never suffer for their infuriating errors. He gave Wigan everything, consistently and shamelessly - but nothing will happen and the result stands forever. There's no point trying to understand why - you need more than a degree in psychology to reckon with the reasons why everyone has switched from loving the wonderful, crazy institution that is City to despising the Club overnight - but surely this weekend has once and for all shown that we must have a disinterested observer making the final decision based on video evidence. I used to oppose this but it works brilliantly in rugby and the fans can enjoy the game (and accept fair defeat)rather than going berserk with these strange, frail people who cannot handle the pressure of the modern game Incidentally, the tension of the wait would only enhance the excitement. It doesn't matter who you support -you know it makes sense in 2008. Just look again at the zombie -like expression on Steve Bebnnett's face as he makes wrong decision after wrong decision. We can't leave our game in the hands of men like this...............

ok Fully agree.

It's a shame the refs themselves don't take a stand, cos they're the ones getting the stick for being "only human" while the FA, UEFA & FIFA wash their hands of all responsibility.

The posts this weekend have been all about reffing mistakes. They should be about football.

It's now time to import referees from other countries. Language barriers shouldn't be any different a problem than now, there being so many nationalities in the EPL. Clubs who play in Europe will be used to it anyway.

I'm not saying that the standard elsewhere in Europe is perfect but from what I see of European league games, the standard does appear to be better overall (save Italy, whose refs are probably still being bribed to this day).

One of the major problems I see is that the 'Respect' campaign has given licence to certain (or should I say, UNcertain) referees to indulge what I see as their passion for 'being in charge' above all other considerations, (like making correct decisions) knowing that the Respect campaign will afford them more immunity from on field diatribes. It's not a trait that's exclusive to us but lets face it, us British do 'Jobsworth' better than any other nation. Give someone a uniform and a bit of authority and the 'control freak' mentality kicks in. The British are really not very good at being able mentally to properly deal with being in a position of authority, particularly when it comes to decision making and explaining POOR decision making and this trait isn't just confined to sport!

Let's get some better refs from overseas here!
