The Quinn Insurance British Masters

European Tour
by Tano24 (U12856014) 25 September 2008
comment on the article

The 2008 winner of The Quinn Insurance British Masters had to be decided by a play-off after defending champion Lee Westwood and Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño of Spain both finished 72 holes tied at twelve under-par.

On the third play-off hole, Westwood missed his Par putt which meant 27 year-old Castaño won his fourth European Tour event.

It was a great week of golf at The Belfry and Castaño proved to be a deserved winner.

Give your thoughts on the British Masters?

Castaño's Scorecard:
Day One:71
Day Two:70
Day Three:68
Day Four:67

bluesboy3 - "Westwood - what a bottler" - are you being deliberately provocative ?!?!
Westwood might have lost yesterday, but he is one of the best finishers in the game. He has won 25 tournaments around the world (by way of comparison, world no. 8 (or whatever he is) Stuart Cink has won 5 tournaments in his entire career !
But for the Ryder Cup efforts last week, Lee would have won the Masters quite easily.

Bluesboy
You really do have no idea.
Another numpty who jumps on the bandwaggon.
What about the two 10 footers he holed in exactly the same circumstances...don't they count?

I got back from the Ryder Cup on Tuesday after a week of watching fantastic golf and sitting in the Kentucky sun and I'm still cream crackered!

Remarkable Lee Westwood even turned up to play, let a lone come second. I think we should recognise how much Westwood wanted to retain his title, and what a true sportsman he his. Any true golf fan should find it hard to knock the guy.

Expect him to win a major in the near future.

Westwood's short game was always is weakness, but it has greatly improved over the last year. No one can say he's not worked hard on his game and fitness.

I'm not sure what's wrong with you people. Wanting our players to fail all of the time. Perhaps we should start showing a bit more belief?

westwood has the game to win!

years ago when he peaked he had an allround game- and could at least clutch putt(when he needed to), then he started a family and was almost uniterested in competing

at the mo he is without question in the top few in terms of long game, but his putting isnt quite there!

but westy is a class player and will feature in the big tournys he is a very very strong golfer, and is a proven winner, and them putts will strat dropping!

Breadman, Westwood has now finished in the top 3 of 7 tournaments in the last year since his last win. In all but the US Open he really ought to have won but was let down by his poor short game and short putting. I am impressed by the work he has put in on his short game and his fitness but he still misses lots of short putts and it has been a long time since he could be considered a good finisher. He is tremendously consistent these days much like Robert Karlsson but both like they need a big lead to get the job done on a sunday.

How good is Castano? Haven't seen much of him but could he be a contender for the 2010 Ryder Cup team?

i dont want him to fail but he hasnt done anything in a major to convince me that he can win. i believe the short game deficiencies is the main problem. if he proves me wrong i will be pleased for him.
