Captains at Wales

Ryder Cup

Now that Davis Love appears to have ruled himself out for the captaincy at Wales, this could prove to be a problem for Europe.

I think Corey Pavin would want to captain a team in US (2012) - the only outstanding candidate for the US in Wales is Fred Couples. The problem is that Freddie is, rightly, very popular in the UK - likeable, charismatic, friendly - one of golf's good guys. Europe need to be careful that they pick a captain that can compete with the popularity of Freddie otherwise the US could get the same sort of support in Wales that Europe got in Detroit.

Given this, I don't think Sandy Lyle would be a good choice. I would give it back to Woosie supported by Sam Torrance and another experienced popular figure who misses out on the team (Darren Clarke or Olazabal or Jiminez for example).

Because winning captaincy experience is not a pre-requisite to be a winning Ryder cup captain, otherwise Woosnam would never have been a winning captain. Are you stil following this or do I need to write the argument in simple steps?

We're agreed that winning captaincy experience is not a pre-requisite to be a winning Ryder Cup captain. As I have previously stated Ian Woosnam was the right candidate to be captain in 2006. We need to win the cup back in 2010 and having a former recent winning captain would be a real boost to the team.

No. Olazabal for captain in 2012 and Montgomerie for captain in 2014.

I don't feel Lyle is the right choice especially after his 2it's too hard I'm giving up" attitude at this years Open. Woosie would be a good choice for the extra home crowd support similar to the Irish boys got at the K Club, but Olazabal could work although when he returns to playing later this year I think he would be aiming to play. Monty, again would be a good choice although he will feel he still has the game to be a player rather than a leader so leave him to 2014. Why not Woosie? Europe won all five sessions with him in charge, even though they were favourites I don't think a European team had ever done that before. So we have experience, a desire to do it again and his continued competive edge by playing and winning on the seniors tour, what better qualifications to do the job could anyone want?

have,nt any of the above comments conviced you yet...obviously not.
so you bringing up that old chestnut.
"a desire to pay tax in is beloved wales".

so he lives in jersey. so what!!
so do hundreds of others, probably from england, scotland and wales for the same reason. the lads saving a bob or two i for one don,t blame him.
facts and figures still stand him in contention for the captain of 2010 ryder cup.
is heart still lies in wales no matter where he lives i,m sure. otherwise he,d have jersey behind his name
