Denman Responding Well To Treatment!

A RELIEVED Paul Nicholls on Wednesday delivered the news jumps fans have been waiting for: Denman will be back to defend his Cheltenham crown in March.

The Gold Cup winner success-fully underwent treatment in Newmarket on Tuesday for his irregular heartbeat and is due to return to Manor Farm Stables in Ditcheat on Friday.

Denman was taken to Rossdales veterinary practice in Newmarket on Monday to be treated by leading cardiac specialist Celia Marr after Nicholls' vet, Buffy Shirley-Beavan, had examined the unbeaten chaser last Thursday and diagnosed an irregular heartbeat.

Nicholls said: “He's fine, thank goodness, and we're all absolutely delighted. Fortunately, he didn't need to undergo an operation. He was administered quinidine, which is used to put the heart back into rhythm, and it went back almost immediately. He'll stay in Newmarket for another 24 hours to confirm everything is still okay, and he'll come back to the yard on Friday.

“He'll then have an easy month. We could put him straight back into training, but the toxicity of the drug can lead to side effects, so we'll start from scratch, building him up quietly with a view to having him ready in the new year. That would mean the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown over Christmasis very unlikely.

“Whether he has one or two runs before the Gold Cup is almost immaterial, but his No. 1 target as far as I'm concerned is the Gold Cup, and we're all looking forward hugely to getting him back.”

Great news. I, much like yourself, am a big Kauto fan but Denman is a real champion and I hope all's well and we see the beast back at his very best come March

Why would anyone want to give this good news of the champion 1 star?

Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman has undergone successful treatment in Newmarket for an irregular heartbeat.

The news means Paul Nicholls' brilliant chaser, who will return to his home in Ditcheat on Friday, will be back to defend his crown in March.

Nicholls told the Racing Post: "He's fine, thank goodness, and we're all absolutely delighted."

He added: "Fortunately, he didn't need to undergo an operation.

"He'll then have an easy month - we'll start from scratch, building him up quietly with a view to having him ready in the new year.

"That would mean the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown is very unlikely.

"Whether he has one or two runs before the Gold Cup is almost immaterial, but his number-one target, as far as I'm concerned, is the Gold Cup."

Only thing that concerns me is that he's going to have an "easy month"!

Could that not induce the same problem again if he gets fat?

Great news that he will be fine. Hope this will be the end of the problem for him.

His next race will probably be in the Aon i'd imagine, then the Gold Cup.

And because that is such a light campaign, has the possiblity of him running in a certain 4 1/2m handicap increased?

For what its worth, i don't think so, should he win a second Gold Cup.

So with only one run before th Gold Cup, will that mean he'll head to Aintree, or maybe even Sandown for the Whitbread?

The Whitbreads a great shout Eddie, that is a possibility now I'd say. Maybe want a bit of cut though.

In my opinion horses do not come back from this sort of problem, I won't be backing Denman for the Gold Cup.

Amen to all the above. But I'm secretly yearning for a thread headed ARKLE RESPONDING WELL TO TREATMENT; there are people who would pay good money for that.
