Firstly my best wishes go out to Rodrigo Possebon, I really hope he makes a full and speedy recovery - I hope against hope that it isn't as bad as it looked on my monitor.

Secondly, I knew as soon as the ball spun out in between the two players involved that something horrible was going to happen. In fairness to Pogatetz he did have his eye on the ball and indeed got the ball first. What I can't defend is the agressive nature of his follow through - which is what ultimately caused the damage. There would have been hell on if it had happened to a Boro player - no doubt.

Best wishes again to Possebon, sorry and speedy recovery.

It was a reckless challenge, not a deliberate assault as is seen a couple of dozen times each season in every division.

The ball was won by Pogatetz, both feet made contact with the ball before they made any contact with Possebon, does this tell you anything about the challenge.

yes it does tell us something! It tells us that you dont undertsand a dangerous challenge when you see one! Just because you make contact on the ball with both feet doesnt mean it isnt a foul, or a straight red!
If people arent punished for this then it will continue. I dont want to hear horror stories of little lads getting their legs snapped in 2 because they think like you, that stupid challenges are acceptable just because you get to the ball 1st!

And as for this 'winning the ball' argument. If Fernando Torres controlled the ball on his chest, and just as he did, Wayne Rooney comes flying through the air feet first at chest height, both feet making contact with the ball, but sliding off the top of the ball almost decapitating Torres in the process, by that logic it is fair game because 'he got the ball first'.....

fair point, but then it would be torres' fault for being 'to slow to react'......

Right Freddawlanen- I am actually a Spurs fan so am completely impartial, and also a ref. A reason for awarding a red card is "if a player uses excessive force". If that takle wasn't usng excessive force then what was, do you want him to drive a tank into him or something. Couple with the fact that he won the ball and then followed through higher than the height at which he won the ball gives, me, a ref, two reasons to send a player off. Don't give me this 20 years ago bull****, even then a player by law should have been sent off.

i am sorry but you can't say he wasnt intending to do it because you know when you jump in 2 footed with your studs flying that you are going to injure someone he was quite rightly given a straight red card but i think he should be out for longer than 3 games

yeah, it was a bad tackle but the lad isn't gonna make it over here anyway, he'll end up in the Belgian league or something.

end up in the Belgian league?

you clearly havent seen the kid play, and you clearly dont know how highly rated he is at united.

thank god he's ok and nothing serious..far as i know it just looks like just a big gash on his leg, he'll be back soon hopefully.

on a brighter note..United youngsters looked top class against boro..very promising.
