Why is everyone complaining about Faldo?

Ryder Cup

Will someone please tell me what Nick Faldo did wrong?

Yes, he picks the team and plays the game of Golf, but it is up to the players that he picks to perform too.

Yes, Europe lost to the USA in the Ryder Cup, but we will live - and accept it now.

It's time that people got off Nick Faldo's back, it's getting irratating.

If Europe had Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington performing, then the final scoreline might have looked brighter than USA 16 1/2 - 11 1/2 Europe.

because as faldo used to say when he was asked why monty didnt play full time in the states?
"i think he likes the fat cheques in europe!"
monty has never forgiven faldo for that, however when you consider that monty has NEVER won in the states and NEVER won a tournament anywhere with the worlds best player in it,you have to come to the conclusion that his career is not GREAT,just good.
its also very questionable how much the likes of seve faldo langer used to put on the 'order of merit'
bashing yourself to death the week before or the weeks after a major was never faldos style.
european tour events were nothing more than warm up events for majors for him.and he was right !

he is not close to faldo or seve but they are in the all time top 12 or so they are a cut above!

but monty is far superior a golfer to james or torrence!

i am a great faldo fan as every one knows, but it seems there are so many faldo or monty fans around, i feel its a bit biaesd, as i never take consideration of what the press say- i dont even know what the press or monty are saying at the mo(i can guess) but discount it in the same vein as what i do with faldo's press!

Colin Montgomeries's arrogant, supercilious, cynical comments on the Ryder Cup gave away his true personailty and the reason why he was not selected this year. He is totally unaware of it but he has huge personality problems There was a little smile flickering over his lips as he spoke and this has git to make his reaql loyalty and commitment suspect. Is he for Europe or is he for Montgomerie ? Next day he shot an 81 at the Belfry and finsihed 139th for the day. That says it all His golf has gone and he is trying to become the oracle the spokesman for golf instead of a player. He is only person who has openly criticised Faldo Everyone knows that the Americans played brilliant golf There was nothing we could do - except Montgomerie of course He had to get his oar into Faldo.

its always been about montgomery, when europe won 3 in a row it was always about montgomery the leader, im the leader on and off the course, i'll take the rookies under my wing blah blah blah. and he's been living off this success (a team success not individual). when was the last big tournament montgomery won? i cant remember.
his golf over the last 18 months has been shocking and yet he still has to have an opinion about everything in golf. why doesnt he shut his mouth and concentrate on trying to play good golf? nah not monty even the couple of weeks leading up to the ryder cup he's being interviewed about what needs happen blah blah blah. monty, nobody wants to listen to you, your mouth and big child.
whilst the ryder cup is important would Harrington give up his 2 majors this yr for winning the cup last sunday? not a chance. would monty give up europe's 3 in a row for him to a major - dam right he would! monty is still hanging on to the ryder cup because thats all he has left - he knows he'll never win a major, the ryder cup is only thing that keeps him in the limelight.

if monty was such a great player why hasnt he won a tournament in the States? surely great players are able to win on the biggest, best and most important tour in golf?!

Oh for gods sakes the we love Faldo clique still think the man can do no wrong doh

If he didn't demoralise players with his purile opening speech, he certainly didn't motivate them to go the extra mile for him. To those that say 'just playing in the Ryder Cup should be enough motivation' then why is Tiger's record so cr@p? He is after all head and shoulders above any other player of the current generation. Could it be that he isn't motivated as a team player? Maybe a captain he felt he was playing for (e.g. M. O'Meara?) would get the best out of him? Oh no I forgot given that Faldo was woeful the captaincy doesn't count does it?

Faldo is so full of himself he ignored the advice of several past captains that he needed good back up. The result? He ended up pressing inexperienced young pros that were supposedly there to take in the atmosphere to act as his eyes and ears out on the course. He was so thinly spread that he was busy tossing the crowd cans of red bull whilst Garcia was losing the lead singles match by throwing a tantrum.

He missed the fact that the Americans were moving tees to nulify yardage charts (any top pro would value accurate yardages as worth 2-3 shots per round. How many matches turned on a couple of shots either way?).

He told Westwood he was dropped DURING his Friday AFTERNOON fourballs instead of waiting till has match was finished. Westwood went from 2 up after 9 to halfing that match.

He undermined the Welsh Tourist boards attempts to attract thousands of Americans to Celtic Manor with yet more schoolboy idiocy (he's really not very bright is he?) and although that obviously had no impact on the match result it underlines his stupidity.

He should have done more to get Poulter to qualify via Gleneagles giving him another Wild card.

He should have persuaded the Garcia's and Harringtons to ease their schedules so that they were not so tired going into a Ryder cup.

He should have insisted the hotel block all calls to players rooms after say 10:00 at night.

In other words he was pathetic, ill prepared and, to be blunt, laughably naive.

Of course the fact that not all of our players performed didn't help but Faldo has to shoulder some of the blame for that just as Zinger is entitled to credit for getting the most out of his squad.

Did Faldo lose us the Ryder Cup? Debatable, he didn't do it single handedly, but he was a major contributing factor. It's time his apologists recognised that good golfer though he was, that does not mean he is/was a good team leader. He was a disaster and hopefully we have seen the back of him.

bouncy.
i lost interest halfway through your pathetic rant.
did you miss anything to blame on faldo?,credit crunch, rangers european exploits this season?..
but hey everyones entitled to their opinion including bitter posters like you.
i do take exception to your comment that 'faldo' was a good player.
no he wasnt a 'good' player,he was one of the greatest players in the history of the game,a LEGEND of the sport.3 us masters ,3 british opens,26top tens in majors,29 european tour wins,9 us tour wins ,18 world wide wins,11 ryder cup teams, record caps, record points scorer on both sides in HISTORY!.
faldo has also won an event with tiger woods in the field..1997 LA OPEN[4 WEEKS BEFORE WOODS WON HIS FIRST MASTERS]
eat your heart out monty!

still think faldo was only a 'good ' player bouncy?

Weir - Faldo wasn't a 'good' player that's for sure.
Neither was he a good RC captain - he was abysmal.
Whether or not that would have made the difference this time I very much doubt - but, he was still a very poor captain in my eyes.
And no I don't like him - or Monty for that matter

Faldo is god.
i agree with you on the point that everybody seems to be jumping on the bandwagon to take a dig at Nick Faldo for the U.S. R C victory and people forget that there were 12 players in the team who must also look at themselves. I said at the start that I did not think Faldo had the temperament, man management or motivational skills to retain the cup and take no delight in that being proved correct. I will say however that I think Nick faldo did his utmost and made his team selections with honesty and a genuine desire to win.
People are saying he was not a good captain but there have been other captains who have not won and he will certainlt not be the last to fail in their attempts.
Nick faldo had a great career, he is possibly the best golfer Europe has ever produced and he does not deserve the abuse being aimed at him. Yes, with hindsight, it is easy to say he should have done this or that. He had the responsibility of choosing the pairings and order of play, unfortunately on this occasion they did not work out and we lost the cup. Lets not forget we were playing against a very good U.S. team who all seemed to play some of their seasons best golf at Valhalla.
Maybe the biggest problem is that after winning so convincingly last time and having won 3 on the trot we fell into the trap of thinking we just had to turn up and collect the cup again. The positive side is that if we had won 4 in a row it might have turned the media and public off the event and that would in turn make it harder to sell to the worldwide audiences.
