Broken collarbone to best season yet

Road cycling
comment on the article
Ben Swift

After a packed summer including the Olympic Games and the Tour of Britain, Ben Swift is riding in the men’s under-23 road race at the Road World Championships.

The Tour of Britain went really well for the GB team, we had some really good results and I nearly claimed the climber’s jersey again. I was a little disappointed to lose the jersey, but what better rider to lose it to than Danilo di Luca.

Coming out of the Tour of Britain I have had really good form heading into the Road Worlds. We rode our last race before the Worlds on Sunday at the Giro del Canavese. It went really well - it was the same distance as the Worlds and a similar profile with roughly the same amount of climbing. I ended up a close second, so the legs are good and the morale is good. All that is left now is to rest up.

The season this year has been my best so far. At the start of the year I broke my collarbone quite badly and spent 15 weeks on the turbo-trainer. I thought my season was over but it turned out to be my best yet - three wins and 20 top-10s, getting selected for the Olympics and a fourth in the European championships. It has been a great year for me.

Looking forward to the Worlds, the course is really good for us, it’s quite a tough circuit with no real rest after the climb, so it should come down to a very select group for the finish. I would love to get a result here to cap off a good season.

After the Worlds I have a month off, then it’s back on the track and working towards the Track Worlds, should I get selected. The future for British cycling is great, especially after the Olympics, and it’s very exciting with the British professional team just around the corner.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments. I’ll do my best to find time to answer, but bear with me - it’s sometimes difficult getting an Internet connection in some of the hotels!

in breeding?

come on please! my equally insulting comment is because i would never think to cheer on only the essex based contingent in the GB teams. Do try to get over your small island mentality and support ALL of the GB team....

why ask ben anyway!? he's from the small island known as 'rotherham', and used to ride for scunthorpe poly (who, unluckily, lost out on a bronze in national team pursuit ride off). yikes

Swifty - what do you think of the phenomenon by which if an athlete is still in an age classified competition by the time they are like 22 then they clearly wont make it to the top level? Not saying this is the case with you, but really if you were that good you would be in the (fairly mediocre) senior team? I find it odd that such a supposedly strong talent would be consigned to the juniors.....are you dissappointed not to be in the senior team or do you honestly think this is the best place for you now?

Sorry I do support Team GB, but I also tend to favour the underdog - small islands and nations.

Cmon Ben / Team GB - and allez Shlecks and Kirchen for little Luxembourg!

Watching Ben at the Tour of Britain was a highlight, but after his breakaway we never saw him again. At his age it's all about gaining experience, and staying fit. For the next few years he has to beome faster and stronger without blowing his patellas to pieces. I hope he succeeds. He seems like a nice kid.

Great ride today Ben.

So close to getting on the podium after such a long day in the break and doing a lot of chasing yourself.

Hi Ben

Just wondered what you thought about the debate (see other threads) on whether it would be possible to attract sufficient sponsorship to develop a predominantly British team capable of competing in le Tour.

Of course I wouldn't expect you to comment on whether you would join such a team. Only whether from your perspective the ambition has a chance of succeeding.

Manx Londoner – great question.

Also, I would like to know what was going through Bens mind (apart from pain) on that last lap. I would find such a de-brief a real insight – that is if you haven’t got a book on its way and can’t share the moment….
