Saturday's Premier League action

Premier League
by Paul Fletcher (U1816326) 20 September 2008
comment on the article

As I left the house this morning I noticed that a mailshot had dropped through the letter box with "Countdown to Christmas" written all over it. I ask you - Christmas? It is the middle of September.

Having been woken in the middle of the night by noisy neighbours and while battling against a cold - though I don't like to talk about it - Yuletide messages did little to lift the spirits.

However, I imagine that quite few Premier League managers wouldn't mind Christmas coming early. Stoke boss Tony Pulis perhaps, as he contemplates his team's trip to Liverpool today.

What's more, I imagine Gianfranco Zola wouldn't mind kicking off his West Ham career with three points, while opponents Newcastle will take anything they can get at the moment.

Sunderland and Middlesbrough fans will feel like it's Christmas if their team triumph in the Wear-Tees derby.

Blackburn v Fulham and Bolton v Arsenal (plenty of previous there) complete today's fixtures.

There might only be five of them but there is plenty to keep us going.

MOM - I vote Song. He played the perfect DM role to a T. He had the strongest game today IMO.

It appears Davis made contact with the ball before he made contact with Cliche.

One wonders what Wenger "saw" ? whistle

Just because you make contact with the ball, it doesnt magically absolve you from commiting a foul, you know.

Seems Fletch is a bit disappointed with us getting the win.

Ah well. Still early days though, and last season we were top until March time, then fell away, due to a lack of strength in depth. I hope that doesn't happen again.

Had the contact with clichy been made prior to that of the ball, then a foul would have been committed...I suppose there are different rules for Arsenal...winkeye

Some people think it was an overly aggressive tackle, and a dangerous one, which is why they are annoyed with it. Yes he did touch the ball first, and it was there to be won, but the amount of force used is what some are questioning. Undoubtedly the reaction is more because Clichy was badly injured as well. Overall, he was booked, and that's that.

Rash tackle? Of course, but he did win the ball. If he hadn't it would have been another Eduardo situation all over again. I dont' think Davies should have been penalized for that. He clearly went for the ball unlike the Eduardo tackle with the defender going way way over the top of the ball as right into the shins. Clichy will be out, but it will not be a serious injury.

Too true! But then again Davies is kinda a thug.how a forward could have the most fouls committed last season beggars belief!
