GB v Austria - day one

Davis Cup
comment on the article

Hello all,

As a fellow journalist said to me yesterday, being at Wimbledon in September is a bit like celebrating Christmas in June. It's good, but there's something not quite right about it. As I walked into the grounds this morning, a crane swung rather menacingly above my head and the unlikely sound of Van Halen's Jump was blaring out from Court One.

Let's hope Alex Bogdanovic is fooled into believing this is not really Wimbledon. The 24-year-old has lost all seven of his matches in the men's tournament at SW19 and has never won a live match in Davis Cup. He's up against Jurgen Melzer at 1100 BST on Court One.

Andy Murray follows against Austria's number two Alex Peya. Unless Murray wins both his singles and Britain win tomorrow's doubles, Boggo is going to have to get the monkey off his back or John Lloyd's side are doomed.

Tom Fordyce will be taking you through the action later and I'll be chipping in with a few thoughts from down here. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts too...

Robert Dee!

I think you're onto a winner there King. He's never lost a high-level match.

I would rather he gave up, if Boggo is the best he's got in the way of support. sadface

What another b disaster.

Bout time we just left Boggo at the level he clearly is at and stopped the Wimby/DC.

Nothing personal, but he just hasnt got it and never will have at top level.

Personally, I would like to see Murray drop out of this sham and play all the youngsters.

So we would drop down the pile, but that might prompt some real effort to find tomorrow's players and show the true face of British Tennis.

Might galvanise some positive action or at least give the youngsters some experience.

AS it is Murray is singlehandedly papering over the cracks in the LTA and protecting the cosy establishment.

Oh my god. That Peya bloke is awful. Boggy you might be able to pull off victory! It may take five sets, but this is your chance to actually beat someone! COME ON BOGSTER!

In a perverse way I would like it to be two all and for the tie to hinge on a potential classic encounter between the no 162 and 164 in the World. It is Boggos Waterloo, his defining moment, his chance to show the world that, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. It will be nip and tuck as these two gladiators fight it out for their five minutes of fame. Lets face it Boggos never going to win a minor ranking tournament never mind Wimbledon but win in the situation that I've described and he will be forever known as the tiger of British tennis who kept the team in the upper echelons of World tennis.

Haha, very true. Bamos Boggo, become a national hero on Sunday!

But GB would get thrashed in the world group next year whoever they draw anyway...
