Wilst most people will talk about how badly Spurs played this detracts from what was a classic smash and grab away performance by an impressive Aston Villa team, with a lightning quick attack a strong defence and the excellent Reo Cocker dominating proceedings in midfield, Martin O neils men comfortably exposed a Spurs side short in belief and who like strangers thrown together by a random turn of events.....There was a lot of talk before the season of Spurs snatching that coveted fourth place perhaps at the expense of Arsenal, they would have to show championship winning form, here on in to challenge a top six finish, and although they are to good to be relegated! with the manager spending 60million over the summer Spurs fans could expect a lot more....meanwhile Martin O Neil quietly gets on with the job in hand and dont be suprised if his team is the package that challenges the top four dominance

One passage I was particularly pleased about from last night was in the 1st half when Barry nearly made it 2-0. The switch from Young down to Gabby (i think) on the right was sublime, would have been perfect if it had ended up in the net

Great performance from Villa, but in the event, if Gomes had saved Young's shot as he should've, then one of Spurs's balls into our box had dropped a bit more kindly, things could have been a lot different!

That said, our win was fair enough I think. NRC was our best player again, he's been good since the end of last season but he's really turned it on since Milner arrived. Ash Young was great as ever, Barry's best performance of the year, Luke Young and both centre backs were outstanding, Petrov tidy (if a bit quieter). Carew was good, I think Gabe is getting a bit harshly treated (as usual), Friedel good but a bit flappy. Shorey I'm not so sure of, if Lennon could cross we'd have been in some trouble last night. I'm sure he'll come good though

As for Spurs, Bale looks fantastic, Gomes too - otherwise, Dawson, Corluka, Bent and Modric look like they've never seen grass before. Playing Corluka at RB was an error given that he got battered by Young and Barry at VP last month. And why did Zokora go off? I thought he was playing well. And why no start for Jenas?

As a Villa fan my heart was in my mouth every time Lennon got the ball. i watched it in a pub with some other teams' fans and i was surprised how highly they rated us all through the game. Most seemed to think if Spurs got what would have been a 'smash and grab' draw again it would've been a travesty.
In hindsight...(though i was worried 'til the whistle went) we ran that game and only let them in it for the last ten minutes.
On another point... did anyone else think the ref was just playing to the crowd when he gave Ash a yellow card ? In comparison to Dawson's yellow it was completely unmerited.
i thought it was ridiculous that we came away from there with as many yellow cards as we did...

There was a shout in the pub last night on how much Brad Freidel looks like Hellboy. Googled Hellboy this morning and they were spot on!

Newcastle (Eastenders?) fan in peace.

Class team and a manager allowed control.

Most rounded English team in the prem, IMO.

Cheers for shutting them spurs fans up. hahaha

gooner in peace here,

spurs WILL NOT go down. It's another slow start like last year and the year before. whenever you have wholesale changes it will take time to gel. The newly promoted teams are having a great start probably because they are playing with pretty much the same team and there is existing chemistry.

An organized team effort almost always gets you a result rather than just relying on individual brilliance.

It's only 4 games, 34 to go...

Cheers

awesome win for villa...o'neill building a really strong squad, no real 'big names' but ther is an honesty about villa, the players (barry included) are committed to the cause and this can be areally exciting season - maybe a striker short of 'top 4' or UEFA cup but - if harewoods the answer, its gotta be a pretty stupid question - i think o'neill saw another emile heskey - all i can see is a guy who would struggle to top score in league 2 - but u cant get it right all the time - which you get when ur team is packed full of prima-donna's...as 4 spurs - theyll improve but they seem to be playing the wrong formation -i'm surprised at ramos - i expected a much more astute tactically aware manager...
