Clarke hands in resignation

Premier League Chelsea

A Chelsea spokesman said: "Chelsea can confirm that West Ham have made an approach with regards to talking to Steve Clarke.

"They have not been given permission to talk to him.

"Steve Clarke has tendered his resignation as assistant first team coach. We have not accepted his resignation. Talks are continuing."

So it looks like Clarkey is off to West Ham - I think it will be a big loss for Chelsea as he has been the link between management and players and between now and previous regimes.

I am surprised he has decided to go elsewhere as a number 2 - is he destined to always be a number 2 - possibly, some people don't make that step from assistant to top dog.

How will this effect us at Chelsea in the coming weeks?

Steve Clarke has been in a number 2 role at one of the most high profile clubs in the world. He has seen many players, managers and a couple of owners go. In all honesty, I could never seen him being promoted to be the number 1 at Chelsea as the club is always looking for the highest profile name.

What I do see therefore is some progression. He may be going to arguably a smaller club, but one which may well be able and, in view of Zola's inexperience may need, to give him a greater role in the decision making.

More important, West Ham are more than likely willing to risk promoting him should Zola move on. Therefore he may eventually get his chance at the main job, for a decent premiership club. Then all things being perfect, he does well there and provides a springboard to move on to even bigger and better things such as coming back to Chelsea as manager.

Such a loyal man deserves the chance to park his car in another drive. Much love and good luck.

What I find amazing is the number of "numptys" who believe once a player/staff member leave a club for another they are immediately a traitor.
Surely a guy with over 20 years service to one club and who sees the opportunity to become an asst manager rather than a asst coach cannot be called a traitor.
I would call it "Career Progression".
Most Chelsea fans seem to agree with me, i just cant fathom that if you have once played with Chelsea (or any club for that matter) and leave you are branded a traitor unless it was for obscene wages etc.
Go the numptys, you amuse me when i read these posts.

Losing a number two man like Steve Clarke is a blow... but I don't think it will be too damaging in terms of finding a capable replacement. It's just a bit of a shame to see him go after everything he's given to the club.

Best of luck to Franco and Stevie!

I suppose its better to lose someone who has an important and influential position at the beginning of the season to allow a replacement to settle and gain trust which I suspect Clarke to have had with the players

Not good, Whilst managers have come and gone one person has always been there and thats Clarky, our success has only been possible because of a strong defense and that is down to him. If Chelsea did under value him behind the scenes and he does go I wish him all the best.

zola was a great player but has very little management experience.

on the other hand, clarke is vastly more experienced and knows how to coach in the premier league and has done for many years.

therefore, surely the set up at west ham should be steve clarke as manager and zola as assistant.
