OK first match but.........World Cup Scotland by Canadian-bluegrizzly (U13064811) 07 September 2008 Is it just me worrying unnecessarily or is it back to the bad old not so far away days? I would like to know were we that bad or do people think that injuries and bad ref decisions played into this defeat.I figure Macedonia (no offence intended)should have been beaten home or away no excuses. Will we bounce back or not? I just have a bad feeling and all too familiar one.Whats the concencus on Burley's strategies,we havn't had it together through the friendlies and now a loss right off the bat to a team we should have beaten.Somebody give me some hope ! arthurwilliamson (U9883871) posted Sep 8, 2008 If Scotland are to stand a chance on Wednesday George Burley has to look realistically at his squad. Messrs Smith and McLeish had 5 in their midfield with Hartley in the holding role and a lone striker up front. As a result, Scotland were not very spectacular but definetely very well organised and difficult to break down. On Saturday George Burley opted for a more ambitious 4-4-2 formation which turned out to be a disaster. Quite frankly I don`t think Scotland have a strong enough squad of players to be able to play expansive attacking football. Keep it tight and organised in the middle of the park with a lone hard-working striker up front and a solid back 4 and Scotland could beat anyone in this group (home and away).

Anything less and we can put our World Cup dreams to bed for another four years. This is not to be unduly pessimistic, but rather it is appraising the situation realistically.

derekthegrumpycleric (U7152190) posted Sep 10, 2008 My only crumb of comfort is that I couldn't see Scotland beating France twice. I also feel Burley has always been on a hiding to nothing and, as always, the Tartan Army are too soft on underperforming/over-rated players like Hartley or McFadden. Let's all be honest: there are no truly world-class outfield players in the team that's why we're struggling; but, then again, Brazil had unquestionably the strongest team and squad in the last world cup and still bombed.
