Below-par Federer hammers Djokovic

US Open

Despite still clearly below his best, Roger Federer handed a 4-set lesson to young pretender Novak Djokovic.

Federer - who has been declared officially past it by some 606 posters - showed signs of the problems that have bedevilled his season due to his lack of fitness precipitated by early season mono by conceding the 2nd set, something that would never have happened had he been 100%.

However, he was still far too accomplished for the young star.

Novaks mummy didn't get to sing "The King is Dead" this time. Sad.

I got told off up my local last night for cheering on Nadal. Apparently, I should have been supporting the British player. All well and good but, hang on......
Only in the same pub, everyone was cheering when Amir Khan (British) lost to Prescott (Columbian)!
Whats the difference?

i always said that if Murray beat Nadal he would win the whole thing! i have to say i'm not still convinced! very few players win their first grandslam final, and Federer has been simply unbeatable on Arthur Ash for 5 years!! Murray is capable of winning but i cannot see this going to either in 3 sets!

It's win/win as far as I'm concerned. I like Djokovic and I respect Nadal, but I was desperate for Murray or Federer to win this. Now it's assured that one of them will.

I'd actually quite like Federer to win and disprove all the asinine "past it" rubbish that's been thrown at him, although there will still be idiots like Impartial_Lion and his fifty accounts claiming that it's more indicative of a 'weak era' and that Federer only won because he didn't have to play Nadal. But it would still be a great season for him - semis or better in all the slams, a title, and an Olympic gold medal in doubles wouldn't seem too bad for a man who had glandular fever earlier in the year.

But if Murray wins, it could spell the start of a tremendous hard-court dominance. At the worst, it would be a flash-in-the-pan fortnight of brilliance that was never replicated but impossible to undermine.

Either way, tennis wins for having such an interesting and refreshing final. I just hope neither player 'chokes' and we see the best from both of them.

Problems with 606:

Story Headline: Murray eyes historic Slam title
606: DEBATE link: Below-par Federer hammers Djokovic

What the hell is BBC problem? Surely it cannot be hard to copy paste the Headline and Story in a new topic instead of linking to a random topic.

Moderaters - Sort it out please its pathetic

I am rooting for Federer as I don't want Murray to win, even though I'm British - maybe it;s beacuse Brown sent a good luck message but 2 smiling Scotch is too much to bear

Khan has been an arrogant plonker. Who has been fighting no hopers and claiming he is the best.

Murray realised his weaknesses, learned and ironed them out of his game. Oh and guess what he just beat the world number one.

I have so much respect for djokovic, other than wimbledon this year, his consistency is so admirable given he is even younger than Murray. I know the talk is of murray this tournament but dont forget that djokovic got to the final last year, is the australian open champion havin destroyed federer in the semis and has reached the semis of french open twice! he is incredibly consistent and is without question world number three. He will become world number one in the next couple of years.

I am a neutral supporter but djokovic has all the shots and can produce the goods on all surfaces, I would be amazed to see murray reach a semi final at rolland garros. yet to get to the semis anywhere else except this year at US Open.

That said good luck to murray in the final but cant see federer losing
