Buzzing after Beijing

comment on the article

Well the last couple of weeks have been totally manic!!

I’ve been all over the country meeting people left, right and centre. Talking to the media, fans and just random people in bars – it’s been great.

I truly can’t believe how big the whole thing has been. We were all prepared and ready to take on the world at the Olympics, but I for one, wasn’t ready for the aftermath.

We (the Welsh) had an open top bus ride around Cardiff where thousands of people came out to celebrate our success. It was unbelievable to see how happy and proud people were and we didn’t even know them! It was just incredible and I want to take this chance to say thanks to the whole country!! I won’t forget it in a long time.

I was also on the Jonathan Ross show on Friday along with my fellow gold medal winners and it was awesome. He’s one funny guy!!

The best was when he started ripping into my team mate Paul Manning because he’s retiring and not continuing onto London 2012. Luckily he left me alone.

In the green room there were pictures of some of the celebrities that have been on the show like Jay Z, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Ricky Gervais to name a few. Now being amongst them is crazy and quite surreal!!

We got to meet Mike Skinner out of The Streets and also the guys from the Mighty Boosh. Man they were hilarious. But definitely the highlight was seeing Kelly Brook in the flesh. You know when people say ‘Naah, she ain’t as hot in real life’. That definitely doesn’t apply for her, even before she went into the make up room.

I was proper gutted though, because she left before I had a chance to get a photo with her and my medal!!

Now I’m focused on my next goal which is the Tour of Britain. To be honest I’m not expecting too much from the race. Purely because the preparation I’ve had has been non-existent.

I’ve had hardly any time to get out on my bike, and when I have I’ve been totally screwed. I’ll be there to work 100% for my team-mates.

We have a real good chance to win the race overall with Steve Cummings, who is on fire at the minute. Also in the sprints we have Robbie Hunter and Baden Cooke who are both capable of winning stages.

I will definitely have the speed to help them, it just depends what sort of state I’m in when I get there. What stages am I most looking forward to? Definitely the last one in to Liverpool.

I’ve been asked a few times if winning gold has sunk in yet and to be honest I don’t think it really has. When we crossed the line we were all just buzzing and full of adrenaline. I can hardly remember that night and the interviews we did.

One thing does stand out though: the time of 3.53.314. We (the team pursuiters) keep texting each other the time. We still can’t believe it.

I’ve just been bouncing from one thing to the next, mainly media and bars. I don’t think I will really appreciate what I’ve achieved until I retire, because until then there’s always something around the corner especially London in 2012. Bring it on!

A very big pat on the back from a Brit! Do try and savour it (listen to the interview with Tommy Goodwin on the radio 4 website).

Good luck with the TOB.

'British softies squad rather impressive' Yes
they are big fish in a very small pond. Just how
many countries competed in the velodrome ?
As for Hoy, what a one trick pony. I loved the one where the bikers follow a pizza delivery
motor bike round the track. What a joke. Whoever put that in the olympics should be made to watch paint dry. Hoy and cycling's federation have devalued forever the winning of an olympic gold.

Do be quiet tootingmick. By your logic Bolt is also a one trick pony (all he does is run fast in a straight line) and Phelps is a one trick pony (all he does is splash around in the water). Very few countries compete in all olympic disciplines. 14 different countries won medals in the velodrome and many more competed.

What a completely unnecessary and ignorant post.

i agree, more tootingmickeymouse than tootingmick...

and hugely ungrateful of the sacrifice of time & effort that all athletes put into their events, regardless of discipline.

as far as i'm concerned, he's vastly in the minority.maybe he's jealous?

Geraint & all the other olympiads should be proud of just making the olympic team for their country never mind the medals - and ignore the muppets trying to rain on their parade. and the same thing goes for ToB - getting into a team to take part is huge, never mind winning or helping others to win.

Excellent results by all the cyclists. When you dominated the world Track championships I was worried that perhaps you had peaked too early. Obviously I was worrying unnecessarily.

Does anyone know what happened to Victoria Pendleton on the Jonathan Ross Show? She was in the green room but never made it onto the set.

As for Tootingmick, I can only assume he is a frustrated athletics supporter. winkeye

There were some remarkable world records broken at the Beijing games, Usain Bolt's 100 & 200m, Becky Addlington's 800m, and the various records broken by Phelps, but the world record of the games was the GB 4km team pursuit boys, their time of 3.53.314 was truly astonishing. I don't think many people outside the cycling world realize what an incredible time that is. As Geraint said after the race - that record is going to stand for some long time. Absolutely brilliant.
