Live - Saturday's World Cup qualifiers

World Cup
comment on the article

So, the road to South Africa starts here.

Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and England all kick off their World Cup 2010 qualifying campaigns today.

There are some tricky ties, too, with the Scots in Macedonia, Northern Ireland in Slovakia and Republic of Ireland away at Georgia.

Wales and England should pick up a comfortable three points though, as they respectively face Azerbaijan and Andorra.

I don't think that was a bad performance by England epically if you compare to the McClaren game against Andorra, but this is the way we have to start playing if we want to succeed on the International stage and although the goals didn't come they played with 10 men behind the ball for the whole match and I think that it will be tight in Zagreb but we have a good chance.

And Rooney well he may not get the goals but with the effort he puts in he's still head and shoulders England's best forward.

It would be typical if England's best player on Saturday was dropped for a part time footballer who cant even run, never mind run as quick as Laurent Blanc on a bad day!

I'll settle for a 1-0 win by the skins of our teeth for all the matches we have. Including Andorra at home. No team ever wins the World Cup without having ugly wins that questions the integrity of the team. Italy were probably one of crappiest to watch ever back in Germany, but their fans never wanted fancy stuff, just the win. England are good at that and I don't think we should expect any more but that.

If you think internationals were about attractive football that yields results of 5 goals and up, you obviously stopped watching international football since 1974.

National competitions are never about the Goal Difference just about who can grind out the wins, and with that Capello is doing just fine in that area.

In 2006 we were worrying about how we couldn't get into the Semi Finals, how things have changed with McClaren.

Considering England were playing a poor Andorra side with a 10 man defensive line, they did not do too bad a job. OK, so they did not play particularly well, but I would sooner England build on their performances than peak too early like Holland in the Euro Championships. The main thing is that they got the job done.

My concerns are that players are STILL not being played in the club positions, which is really the whole point of being selected and not encouraged enough to go and express themselves on the pitch to the best of their ability.

I'm sure with the talent we have on offer, the team will grow and become the footballing force we all hope they can be (and should be).

The test will be against Croatia, I just hope Capello adapts his thoughts on how the team should line up and play. Thus far, there does not seem to be an improvement from what we have witnessed with McLaren and to some extent Eriksson.

At half time on Saturday's match I wanted to shoot Capello, half the players(to prove they had left their brains at the hotel) and a decent amount of the England fans there to put them out of their misery.

I walked out of the pub at half time and off to a mate's birthday party.

Credit where credit's due, Capello seems to be as annoyed as I am about that performance so I'd be better off giving him the gun and seeing what he wants to do with it.

I suppose three points are three points but we have still yet to hit top gear under Capello and we are going to need to hit top gear if we want to get to South Africa.

Redknapp believes none of the Croatian players would get into the England team, after watching this I don't think they would want to be in this team!

====

If memory serves me right, some English managers (or commentators?) last time said exactly the same. (when England got whipped twice afterwards) Perhaps they think English players are much superior technically or tactically or whatever.

I disagree but in the meantime I think these suggestions are correct because these teams play, IMO, differently and, I do not think, any Croats will fit into English national team's style. And they do not need that as it was proven by convincing wins home and away.
